Clinton cites Decker as model program

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton this week highlighted the Decker School of Nursing, home to the nation’s only doctoral program in rural health, as a leader in nursing education.

“It is, in effect, creating the mold for others to follow,” Clinton said during a Monday visit to the campus. She met with University officials and leaders from the Greater Binghamton health-care community to discuss the nation’s nursing shortage and rural health concerns.

Sure, that's the answer, Hilary. Turn out more new grads.

It's one way to keep nurses' salaries lower and fail to provide retention incentives.

That's part of the equation in my opinion Angie. The other part is indeed graduating more nurses. I'm very bothered that thousands of nurses are on waiting lists who want to be nurses while there is a need.

Agree with Tweety. It's a complicated problem. But the very fact so many who want to be nurses cannot due to a shortage of qualified instructors and positions in schools is just as troubling as any of the other reasons a shortage so deep and critical exists. This is a multi-faceted problem. We definately need to look at ways to retain the nurses we do have. But the inescapable fact is, the nursing force, like much of the USA, IS aging! We need new nurses to come, as well as to take care of the ones we have.

Too many nurses I don't see that happening with all due respect. It is already so out of balance patient/nurse load b/c there are not enough nurses and the baby boomers are going to really have an effect for years to come.
Off the subject I am very excited to have the diverse canidates running for election I just wish someone would be elected into office who really would address and implement changes to our health care in respect to the millions of people w/o health insurance.

during the first year of my nursing school preq's, the whole city college of chicago went on strike. the board of education responded by terminating the insurance of the teachers, one who was pregnant and another that was going through chemo. it took three weeks of action by the students and teachers to even get the teachers a 3% raise.

what occured after all of this? the school board gave themselves raises and then raised the tuition for us students by $2700.

yes, the reason we have a nursing shortage is because of these kinds of attacks on the people that both educate new nurses and those nurses working in such poor conditions already. unfortunately both of the political parties are paid off by the same groups happy with lower wages and poor conditions.

we need a real labor party in the u.s.

Nurses need to educate the media so that they stop reporting that there is a shortage of nurses.

There's no shortage of nurses when 600,000 licensed U.S. nurses have left the profession because of poor working conditions. The shortage is one of good nursing jobs, and that includes faculty positions that pay competitive wages.

Until nurses get the media to stop parroting management's point of view, the shortage of good nursing jobs will persist.

I was very interested in the rural aspect of the article - we in rural hospitals need help.

"The Decker School has had an emphasis on rural health since it was founded,” University President Lois B. DeFleur noted.

Clinton recently reintroduced a bill that aims to increase the nurse workforce in rural areas, expand nursing school faculty and develop initiatives to integrate patient safety practices into nursing education. The Nursing Education and Quality of Health Care Act would provide funds for grants and programs in rural areas to enhance the recruitment and retention of nurses as well as nursing students and faculty.

I agree.

But the others have a point. Even the nurses not practicing at the bedside are aging and will also need nursing care.
