Hidden America: Nearly Half of Newborns at Tennessee Hospital Are Drug-Dependent

  1. 1
Just saw this great piece on ABC News Nightline regarding the drug dependent newborns born in a Tenn hospital, and the NICU nurses who care for them.

Drug use and subsequently infants born to mothers addicted to perscription pain meds seems to be reaching epidemic status in many states including Tenn.

I did clinicals at a hospital like this. The nursing students spent our rotation holding babies and giving phenobarbital. I am glad there are some nurses who are strong enough to do it day after day, it is heartbreaking. I could not do that full time.

The title of the article (ABC's title, that is) is misleading -- the title says half of the newborns at the hospital are drug dependent, but the article is clearly talking about nearly half of the infants in the NICU, not the entire population of newborns in the hospital (then there's the whole issue of whether 23 is really "nearly half" of 58).

I'm really not surprised. I was raised in that neck o' the woods & OxyContin abuse runs rampant. It's quite sad to go back for reunions & find out nearly half of your class are addicts, recovering addicts, or dead from addiction.

My favourite bit was the news reporter doing a quasi assessement of the mother towards the end, "your eyes look kind of dilated, are you *using* again"?

Am kind of shocked that the state of TN does not take away newborns to such mothers at once, but allows them full parental rights with monitoring.
