philadelphia -- the new jersey institute for nursing's new calendar featuring male nurses isn't meant to make women drool. in fact it wasn't even made for women, but instead, is part of efforts to encourage more men to join the female-dominated profession.

"we hope that by showcasing some of new jersey's very own men in nursing, their scope of practice settings and their personal and professional interests, that other men will be interested in nursing as a career," debra harwell, the institute's director, told the philadelphia inquirer for saturday's newspapers.

harwell said men represent 5.4 percent of the 2.7 million nurses in the united states.

more than 175 men, nurses or nursing students, applied to be in the calendar put together by the institute, which is the charitable arm of the new jersey state nurses association.

I think this is a great idea. Too many guys (and gals) still have the wrong idea of why, and what kind of men go into nursing. It is time to dispel the myth.
Just as all types of women go into nursing, all types of men go in as well. And I for one think it is very important, and hope that it will eventually change the concept of nursing as "angels of mercy" to a reality of "highly trained and tested individuals".

Should have made a calander w/ hot female RN's to get more males to want to be RN's.

I don't claim to be an authority on what would encourage men to become nurses but I sincerly doubt this would work.

That idea is giving some the vapors over on the "Calendar Girls" thread.

I can't see most men buying a calander with other men in it...unless, you know...

I think they need to show buff male nurses doing "masculine" work... lifting heavy patients, being in the military, working on a helicopter, in the ER... that might change the image.

it's been brought up a few times on allnurses but apparently this old add had a lot of good impact on male recruiting.

Interesting concept. I noticed that a lot of the nurses in the ad have a military background- this was true in my nursing program as well.

I think I said it in that other thread. I don't like the image that calender protrays. They look too stern and sour faced, with a lack of compassion. Perhaps if one of the cracked a smile, showed a look of concern, rather than trying to be all macho looking I'd be impressed.
