Five sue over nursing-school ouster

Five sue over nursing-school ouster

Sabrina Whitaker had one semester left at St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing before she could graduate and achieve her dream of becoming a registered nurse.
But in November 2008, she was dismissed from the program without warning, Whitaker said.
"They told me my grades were not acceptable and that I was unprepared," Whitaker said. "I knew I was passing prior to my final exam. But I was told very rudely that I had failed."
Whitaker, 39, wasn't alone. Ten other students were booted from the program for similar reasons, she said. It was too late for any of them to get a refund on the $22,000 each had paid in tuition.
Whitaker said she appealed and asked to see her graded final exam.
"They said no," Whitaker said, and told her to consider becoming a practical nurse instead. Yesterday, Whitaker and four of the former nursing students filed suit against the school in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court, alleging breach of contract and fraud.

Very suspicious indeed. I think Whitaker and others who are suing are showing a lot of dedication. I think they will make good nurses.

How can a school "dismiss" someone just "because?"

I don't understand this.

St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing:Welcome was re-established in 2006 as a ONE YR RN program with classes 8hrs/day for 2 days, clinical 8hrs/day for 2 days with 5th day for study/prep work. Students attended after 11 prerequisite classes taken. ALL new nursing programs have growing pains. Students have had concerns that were not properly addressed in first 2 years and new dean took over program in 2008.
AN thread on program: St joseph hospital school of nursing. - Nursing for Nurses

Another Philadelphia nursing program, Drexel University School of Nursing is well established. Students in Drexel's ACE program, another 1yr program have similar concerns re disorganization, grades and NCLEX HESI exams: Survivng Drexel ACE - advice pls!

Outcome of suit will focu on written outline of school program and did it deliver on promissed support and educational guidance.

I would have been suspicious after I heard the program was only a year long.

Unfortunately, a lot of nursing programs do this. In my own program, an instructor tried to fail my friend (2 weeks before graduation!) for very nebulous reasons, such as slowness, etc. She fought back, graduated, and is a very successful nurse on a high acuity floor in an academic medical center.

These programs need to become way more accountable. I think this is a leftover from the old time nursing culture, "my way or the high way".

Nursing programs need to have fair processes in place for such students, not mysterious ousters that seem to be common.

Good luck to these students in their lawsuits!

My school used the "personal analysis" of who will pass boards first time and who will not. Once a couple agreed on someone being at risk for not passing first time................HERE COMES THE PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE poking and criticizing.

A lot of people have their spirit broken and just tolerate it. If it happens early, most will move on to another program. I've seen students who are on their 3rd program before.

These people though are fighting for good reason. The school waited much too long to decide it wanted to cut the ties with them. Obviously a money making decision.

Ugh, at my school there's a 1 year program for people who already have a BSN in another subject (anything from bio to theater). I have to be honest, I don't know how anyone does those things. The sheer workload looks awful.

But yeah, I don't understand why these students weren't counseled prior to expulsion about poor grades.

I had a clinical instructor who was proud of herself for 'weeding someone out' from each of her clinical rotations. She bragged about it.
