Unfortunately, I have worked with an instructor who bragged about "weeding out" students. I also served on an admissions and retention committee and found that there were some instructors who would rather fail students then facilitate their learning. There is a very real difference between "spoon feeding" or coddling students and trying to make it easier for them to learn.

ETA: I do agree that if someone is in his/her sixth or seventh different nursing program and has not been able to complete any of them, it is probably time to look for a different career field or get tested for learning disabilities. I don't say that to sound snarky but a student who is consistently unsuccessful either does not have aptitude for nursing or has some sort of barrier to learning that interferes with academic success.

what i took from erik's post was, not that the student failed that many times, but left and enrolled elsewhere, thinking that the programs were bad, finally realized that they were "all the same"

now my reaction to the OP....if i werent so tired i would be dancing in the street.

I wonder what the "other" side of the story was?? I find that somewhere in the middle is usually the truth.

That college isn't alone with pulling that kind of B.S. The one I go to won't let students see their final grades. We are sure that grades are being manipulated. It's funny how the number of people waiting to jump in at a certain 8 weeks is usually the same number of people that fail that 8 weeks. I wish the people that give the colleges their certifications would actually LISTEN to the students. I know mine doesn't! In the first year I had a clinical instructor (that's still there!) that tried to fail me by coming up with a bunch of lies. I refused to sign the review until she crossed them off. I'm older than the rest of the group, and I was told by others that she only likes the young girls to teach.

But yeah, I don't understand why these students weren't counseled prior to expulsion about poor grades.
One can ONLY get a BSN in Nursing. THe N stands for nursing....there is no other subject in which to get a bsN.

That's the way I took it at first, too, then thought there might be a different angle. Regardless of the student's reasons for changing programs, I don't think I would have the patience---or the money---to keep trying after six or seven attempts in an entry level program. Sometimes life happens. But six or seven attempts? Considering that in most places, it's difficult to transfer nursing credits, it would certainly make me reconsider my goals.

It will be interesting to see how this all turns out.

Sorry I have taught before at the college level in differnt program field. I am sorry to say I wish I had not started down this path seeing what I have seen now. Other disciplines get rid of the nasty instructors, nursing hangs on to them. Nothing to do with education or teaching experience, many of the bad ones have EDs. It is just another area where nursing tolerates abuse. It is an abusive profession plain and simple and I am trying to ignore that but my common sense will not let me.

Like crabs in a basket or a bunch of abused women, the others will reject you if you go against the abuse or dont want to crawl back into the basket. I suspect there is no solution.

There are relatively few nursing instructors because the pay is low compared to the hours that you have to put in: lesson planning, teaching, grading, etc. That being said, it is much lower stress than running your behind off on the floor. Many of these "mean" instructors are not let go just because there's not anyone willing to replace them. I teach, and have had many a student cuss me and call me every name in the book because they didn't review the material and couldn't keep up. So this becomes my fault? A previous poster stated that maybe we need to hear the other side of the story, maybe there's something else going on. Interesting to see how this all pans out.

Its sad that in a time when we desperately need good nurses more than ever, things like this can happen. I have the utmost respect for those who fight it. Best wishes to them.

i remember when my clinical instructor failed me for no reason, and ive heard before that she never liked men to begin and always failed men in her clinical prob after she had a divorce with her husband. She always reminded me her license is more important than her students and she could care less if we fail. i took it to the dean but nothing was done. I still graduated with my BSN and until this day that instructor still gets under my skin. Shes not even in good terms with her son who goes to the same university but a different major

Shes has had 3 years of nasty evaluations and she still has her job until this day. Unbelievable
