It was an FDA panel that made the recommendation. The FDA is under no obligation to follow panel recommendations.

I am always surprised that people will just pump pills into their mouths without reading what is in them. My sister did this after surgery. Luckily she mentioned it too me.

In Britain they changed the amount of paracetamol you could buy over the counter (12 tablets or something) at one time. When I moved back here I couldn't believe the honking great big bottles of it.
There is a pretty good percentage of functionally illiterate people--25% to 40% depending on which estimate you like--so even if people were to look at the labels, there are many who can't read them.

I guess we'll have to include pictures on all the labels, or assign everyone a literate buddy to figure things out for them.

The fact is that, along with the feds push to restrict opioids, there will be a lot of unnecessary suffering to protect a relatively few people from themselves......................and as the saying goes: Make it idiot proof, and someone will build a better idiot.

True but every story that I've seen has said that the FDA generally follows the recommendations...

I just had a patient tell me yesterday, as she watched the news about acetaminophen, that she just popped them left and right at home. She had no clue there was a limit, but she knew too much could destroy her liver. My question was, "then how do you know what is too much?"
I don't think the problem is the drug (no matter what it's in). I think the problem, as we well know, is that folks don't know (or sometimes care) what all has the drug and that they should be doing the math.
I'd hate to see some good effective drug combos get yanked because of lack of education.

It is not only that people are exceeding recommended doses on one particular type of med. Part of the problem is that acetaminophen is in everything. Think about the patient who takes a couple vicodin for chronic back pain. Later in the day she has a headache and pops a couple Excederin for it. That night, she feels a sore throat and thinks she has a cold coming on so she takes some Nyquil. Maybe she still thinks she will have trouble sleeping so she might pop a Tylenol PM.

Many people have no idea that these other meds contain the same drug, and that they may be easily exceeding their dosage. I don't know if banning anything is the answer, but some public service announcements could help. People used to think it was ok to give babies aspirin, and that practice has decreased dramatically. Maybe some of that kind of focused education could help with this issue.

I knew of a teenage girl who wanted to get her parent's attention by attempting suicide, but she did not want to take anything that would really harm her. She took a bunch of Tylenol thinking "it is just Tylenol, it is harmless". Her liver was shot and she died from it. Very very sad case.

I heard it was the acetaminophen that they are removing from this formulations. I know they are requiring different labeling on otc products that contain acetaminophen like cold and flu products. I think just educating the public would be an excellent start

And people may read warnings, though they may not read active ingredients, because they think they'll be safe if they follow the instructions. Picture this: a patient with a bottle of Tylenol and a bottle of Vicodin. The warning on Tylenol says not to exceed 4 grams of acetaminophen a day. Fair enough. The bottle of Vicodin says Hydrocodone 7.5/APAP 500mg. Ok, there's no "acetaminophen" in that, right?--must be safe to take them together! Maybe the prescriber advised the patient not to do this--perhaps the patient had TAKEN said medication as he's being educated by his provider and he's forgotten. It's a recipe for disaster.
while i dont disagree with your post.....what the heck ever happened to personal accountability?????????

if you are going to take something then you should know what the heck you are taking and stop blaming people for your own ignorance! (i know, i know, i live in a fantasy world huh?)

Our facility hasn't banned these meds per se but the pharmacy we deal with will not send the drug unless every time you order it you have a new signed order from the doc. They only send 30 pills at a time and we have patients who take darvocet routinely around the clock...the pills dont last long..My fear is the docs are gonna be buttheads and not sign the order because we bother them so often

you might check into the law on this, where i work they send 30 days worth......if the patient takes 4 a day, that would be 120 at a time...
