I think it is an outrage and an insult to the life of the poor coworker he killed that his sentence was so light. ONE YEAR. That's it. Oh, and poor guy will be on probation for five years. He KILLED a woman. She told him not to touch her with the paddles and he did it anyway. I agree with the above- first degree murder. I can't believe they suspended four years of his sentence. I just hope they room him with someone real big who has a taste for stupid ex-EMTs.

I believe he got a light sentence because he did not intend to kill her. He is young, playful and irresponsible and should have never been given that position.

I wish people wouldn't be so judgemental. He will have to live with this the rest of his life. I would like to believe he went into medicine to help others not hurt them!!!!

My gut says the sentence is an atrocity. But to be fair, it depends on what he is like as a person, in ways we can only know by getting to know him better than we can just by reading the few things we have.

Does anyone know what the driver and his other co-workers think of the sentence? Assuming they know him well, it would weigh a lot, to me.

Young....he is an adult. Playful...um no not playful...just plain stupid.
Irresponsible....definately.

There are many awesome responsible 20 year old EMT's.

He was told it was dangerous and did it anyway then he did intend to do bodily harm. He should be in jail for a minimum of 5 years, preferably much much longer.

Think about this woman who died, doing her job, minding her own business, supporting her young family by herself, what if she were your sister? Doesn't sound so young and playful now does it?

10 years, IMHO, would not have been enough.
He was a dense, greenhorn moron.
I think he was trying to "flirt" with her and I bet he thought it would be cute and be something to get attention from the young woman.

If anything good could come out of this, it would be some changes in training and policy. IMO, they should be trained completely before they're ever put on an ambulance crew, and even then they shouldn't be allowed to touch any equipment until they've had a certain length of "observation" time.
This is not a game we're playing here when people's lives are concerned and dangerous equipment is in use.

For the first time in my life, 2 months ago, I was taken to the ED in an ambulance. They did an excellent job of taking care of me, but if the crew doesn't know what they're doing so many things can go wrong so fast.
You've just got to have people on the ambulance crew who know what
to do, no other way about it.
Someone as dense and untrained as this young man was, is of no help to their co-workers or the patient.

Outrageous. It is open season on women and children. I hate to be so pessimistic, but have you watched the news lately?

Even if he hadn't been trained on the defibrillator, he had to know that a jolt of electricity wouldn't be good for a person whose heart had not stopped. Surely he had heard of electrocution.
