excerpt "
Nursing homes in Indiana and across the nation are perilously close to losing millions in federal revenue, a loss that could result in layoffs, reduced services and possibly facility closures.
The feds cut about $1 billion in spending on Medicare payments to skilled nursing facilities and now are considering cuts of $1.05 billion more.
Those cuts could result in a loss of 30,300 jobs nationwide and $1.5 billion in business activity, officials predict.
"We can foresee the possibility of nursing homes having to close their doors," said David Hebert, a senior vice president at the American Health Care Association. "I certainly foresee that we'll have to let staff go."
The association predicts Indiana would experience a loss of $51 million in business activity, $25 million in labor income and 812 jobs if additional Medicare cuts are added to recent cuts.
The pain is already being felt in Indiana, ranked No. 11 among states that have taken the biggest Medicare cut in nursing home spending."
