Cuts loom for nursing homes in Indiana .....learn about Alternatives to SNF care

An Indianapolis Star article on cuts affecting not only nursing homes but skilled nursing care for the elderly.

http://www.indystar.com/article/2009...ESS/910080451/

excerpt "
Nursing homes in Indiana and across the nation are perilously close to losing millions in federal revenue, a loss that could result in layoffs, reduced services and possibly facility closures.
The feds cut about $1 billion in spending on Medicare payments to skilled nursing facilities and now are considering cuts of $1.05 billion more.
Those cuts could result in a loss of 30,300 jobs nationwide and $1.5 billion in business activity, officials predict.
"We can foresee the possibility of nursing homes having to close their doors," said David Hebert, a senior vice president at the American Health Care Association. "I certainly foresee that we'll have to let staff go."
The association predicts Indiana would experience a loss of $51 million in business activity, $25 million in labor income and 812 jobs if additional Medicare cuts are added to recent cuts.
The pain is already being felt in Indiana, ranked No. 11 among states that have taken the biggest Medicare cut in nursing home spending."

I am in Indiana & can't imagine cutting staff any further. Who is actually going to care for our elderly? The coorporate guru's?

California is cutting heavily as well. Good luck trying to find a position in nursing homes here in Northern California.

Medicare is 8 years away from bankrupcy and TPTB in Congress are proposing $500 billion more in cuts. This is going to cause many hospitals, as well as skilled nursing facilities, to close. The system is so broken, and they just do not know how to fix it.

By far the largest reimburser for (intermediate-care) nursing homes is the Medicaid system. I have not heard of any proposed cuts for Medicaid - rather TPTB want to expand it.

I live in Indiana as well, and worry about what will happen. I live in the south/central part, and resources are scarce to start with. But oddly enough, 2 of the local nursing homes are expanding-1 is doubling in size........

Well, what the heck do they plan to do with all these elderly folks? Throw them out into the streets??

Our country is surely into a huge decline -- what a tragedy it has become.

That is pretty much what happened to the resident psychiatric patients in the 70s & 80s when government funding for those facilities was killed. Funds dried up...state psych facilities closed. SERIOUSLY mentally ill people were discharged into group homes and the like where they promptly stopped taking their medications and became "problematic" for their communities. At some point, I would enjoy seeing politicians cut their salaries and benefits at the same time they are trimming the governments budget. It is increasingly annoying to me that an entire department of "fat" is not even considered when budget woes are addressed...they are, afterall, largely responsible for the budget problems yet do not share in the pain suffered by their constituants.

the world will be so much better without for profit nursing homes like Genesis. Decent countries take their parents in when they're old and don't send them off to decubiti hell.

If you know how ruthless some of these companies can be when it comes to money, life and death, you'd change your mind about NH as well.

My thoughts? get rid of em; it'll take our communities a couple decades to learn to cope and absorb the problem but there's no need to house family for a better selfish quality of life. They're our family! When they're too ill, it's time to go. All of the saved money can go for elderly bus services to do the appointment game.

Notice also how doctors prey on elderly...since when is a mole removal needed for a 90 year old? Insane....leave em at home with family and let them go with family with dignity. Stop the hospital doctor visits for profit and open bus services with the saved billions. I certainly don't want to burden the government when I'm old and no longer able to care for myself...let me die and find what's next!

Wow, that's an interesting idea about life, death and using money for better purposes. Personally, I'm really impressed. I also believe that money should be used to promote quality of life and not to lengthen it. However, I don't think the society is ready to embrace your idea. This is how the health care system runs their businesses and the government saves their face in front of the whole world. And for us, this is why we go for nursing: providing care to sick people regardless of age, sex, race and any thing else. Thank you for being yourself, though.
