Enought with legal excuses that he was in with drawl or drunk or high or a psych patient. Arrest them and put them in jail or prison with the general population!
If they are psychotic then give them psychotorpics but no hiding in mental hospitals for assautlt and battery! Set limits for this type of behavior and it will be reduced!

I gave a bit of my history with "customer violence". My attacker was known to have had encounters with other staff as well as pts. Several incidents later a staff member required a trip to the hospital...a pts family had to call the cops,....what's going on here? $$$$ is the bottom line. Keep the beds filled no matter what. I was told that I should expect this type of behavior. However, when the DON had her wig knocked off, when the administrator felt threatened, pts would disappear as quickly as the ambulance could carry them!
Nurse4Nurse has a petion online to make it a felony to assault healthcare nurses. Several states have enacted laws as such. However, these laws do not apply to those suffering with dementia. Please support care2.com an online petition that seeks to address violence towards healthcare personell. The US Dept of Justice has released some frightening statics on violent assaults towards nurses.
http://www.care2.com. Type in stop the vilolence against healthcare workers in the little google box (on the care2 page), another page listing petions will show up,just click on the title and the petion is there. You can opt for not displaying your name if you wish, however reponses have come in from all over the world. I applaud you for being willing to defend yourself, just make sure that you can stand the consequences...I am barely hanging on.
