the two big groups of nurses who are out of work are; the experienced nurses and the new grads. what's alittle more frightening is that experienced nurses who would qualify for a position are not given because of insurance/preexisting condition reasons and are passed over. I believe all aspects of our applications are being gone over with fine tooth combs- they want to know who your friends are, what your spouse does, who they associate with, what toilet paper you use, and as ridiculious as it sounds- they drive by your house to see what kind of house you live in- this someone admitted to me-CROSS MY HEART! she drove a 1 HOUR drive- each way, on her day off!!, to check out my house. This is uncalled for!!~ WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH NURSING, what does the entire contemporary mess in nursing have to do with nursing!!! Let them write their articles-It justifies their paychecks and deludes their minds.

common sence and practicality seem to elude the decision makers in healthcare. all the above info on stimulus money being handed out- to fund education and placement for new healthcare students ( what's the matter with the ones already educated, licensed and waiting to go , info in these articles- outsourcing to foriegn countries with high nursing unemployment rates here at home( again what's the matter with THIS countries' already existing nursing workforce-educated,licensed, experienced and inexperienced) and a not before brought out point- 5 major hospital systems (in the NJ/Phily area's) plans on building each a NEW hospital a few miles away from the one's they already have(yes, plural- they already have at least 2 hospitals operating each) they claim they don't have the patients to fill their hospitals now, the reason for getting rid of portions of their nursing staff and not hiring nurses. What do they tink they are going to staff these new hospitals with? and why build/construction costs a NEW building- why not spend/put the money into the existing buildings/hospitals they already have- waste, waste and more waste. Again what is the salary of a hospital CEO????

all the major hospitals in NJ are having open form/town hall meetings scheduled for the months of OCT, NOV, DEC at posted on the NJ dept of Health and Senior Services wed site. All new jersey nurses should go to these meeting- not to the hospitals they are employed at because that would /could jeapordize their jobs and ask straight out questions of these CEO's( who are supposed to attend these meetings) the questions, issues mentioned above- position freezes, dangerous staffing, does the CEO know what it is to take care of and be held resposible for a patient= how much nursing knowledge does the CEO really posess, outsourcing( with high nursing unemployment rates) what their salary is- have they had their salary cut( not just 1-2 dollars here and there or a tin cup donation, but slashed to the extent where it would make a difference, are their wives going to be asked to liquidate their state of the art appliances that one CEO was overhead stating he bought for his wife- $3,000 washer and Dryewr set and 2 months later layed-off 35 RN's!!! yes, this is gaul, this COE should be asked in front of a packed room which appliance brand her bought the little woman!! and told she needs to return it!!) to accomodate the economic crisis in health care/nursing, let these CEO's they are being watched by their staff just as closely as they are watching their staff- and they are going to be held accountable, just as the nurses are held accountable.

All this is pure economics. It's called dumping in import terms. The basic idea is to load too many nurses on the market...get that stimulus money and increase the supply and of course, there develops an imbalance. Demand is not enough to absorb the new grads but it sure as hell decreases what they can earn in the marketplace. So the hospitals can pay less and at the same time not feel threatened with strikes or employee dissatisfaction in job conditions.

Hey, the powers that be can continue to treat nurses with disrespect, over work them, maintain unsafe and unfair ratios and simply replace those that quit or speak up and get themselves fired.

Chalk up some more unemployment for the Obama fiasco of stimulus money.

I think it's ironic that other nurses are coming forward and accounting of what they have read in articles( as above- especially the phillyburb article which one reader left a comment about nurses from other countries and noted statistics) and another poster who quoted Fox and Friends. The tread in sept. 2009 the rn job squeeze on this site was closed for administrative review - the discussion was getting intense and factual- none of it was fairy tales misleading our nursing community, it was a swapping of the information on this very subject here in this thread-we/ our nurses are being tossed into the trongs of the umemployed. We NEED to come forward and speak out- we have patient campaigns in our hospitals called Speak-up(ie. if the patient sees a nurse doing something wrong or omitting something that encourages them to speak up to the nurse and manager) why are nurses not afforded the same right when it comes to OUR profession, why are we still expected to be marters in silence. I don't live in CT but I know it's wrong to give stimulus money to educate new(prospective) students for healthcare, when we have new grads and (experienced nurses)- all ready educated and licensed and ready to go, UNEMPLOYED. What do we do with them- toss us out to the trash, count us as a bad mistake and forget about us, abort and shun us from society, turn our backs on us and ignore us. What is it going to take for the wake-up call- a nurses tent city(when we all loose our homes, denied credit- "need this for apartments also- a place to live" because of inability to pay back student loans and stand out on Pennsylvania AVe with signs and a tin cup- "MONEY FOR FOOD" No the thread was not directed at the forign imported nurse as a person but at the method and process of bring them into this country and employing them when this country can't/or won't employ nurses already hear. the same with this stimuls money in CT- there are nurses already in CT/ here(licensed and educated) no job, why in the hell would the money powers want to give money(government money/taxpayer money) to a prospective student for healthcare not ready to go. Are these money powers shifty car salesmen or perverts- here little one I'll pay your tuition if you be a nursing major. O bama I believe is clueless- he just mouths what's written in the speech and happens to be the unlucky sucker in office right now. I think it's all thoses who are in those government agencies under him, the insurance companies, the healthcare CEO's who are the greed mongers- they are well aware of what they are doing- they know how to slash the healthcare dollar and get away with extorsion, robbery, embesselment and murder (by and on paper- the patients they deny and jepordize care) ie. Influenza flu vaccines (not H1N1) did a flu clinic yesterday only 3 vials of vaccine- turned every day people away because we ran out- 36 shot only, closed the clinic at 12:30 supposed to be done at 5:30. however there were 12 hours of clinic hours for a clinic in upper NJ by New York City labeled "Corporate" Healthcare today is starting to look like an olde historic war epic movie- leaving the undesirables for dead. on a side note- today, a wall street mogel- a securities trader was arrested with 6 others for fraud, insidertrading, he is a multibillionaire( he used no weapon, no blood shed, no violence- whitecollar crime) It's time the CEO's, insurance companies and government agencies affilliated with healthcare got theirs too!! They won't if we nurses (who are the ones close to the action) don't SPEAK-UP. As for us old experienced Nurses- we are not so tunnel visioned with having to learn our newly aquired proffessional skils. we ARE able to observe out surroundings and the goings on (the doings of the ding-bats) with our eyes and ears- "OLD Hawk-eyes", we are not out of touch with technology, we are kept updated on our skills- we get manadatories shoved down our thoats every time we turn around ( restraints, PCA pumps, infection control, New this, new that, memos, emails,) We see papers, policies and pumps and hear alarms in our sleep. The excuse for not hiring experienced nurses is PURLY MONEY. There is a difference between age and lazy( lazy is at any age).

So where you are they are hiring new young grads and getting rid of experienced nurses? Where is this? Why would they get rid of older experienced nurses? I don't understand. ?

You don't understand it because you misread and misquoted my post. They are NOT hiring new grads, AND they are getting rid of experienced nurses. New grads require orientation and coaching to become functional nurses, and that means extended periods of higher staffing to keep slower working new hires with mentors. Older experienced nurses, especially those with longevity at a particular facility, are a greater expense in terms of higher wages and greater use of benefits -- most notably health insurance, paid accrued vacation and personal time, and pensions.

I got one for you. Nurse for nearly 30 yrs. one CT hospital reports their nurses volunteered to forego pay raises for several years to help the hospital get its' budget out of the RED ink. They are now in the black ink and pay raise miniscule. Meanwhile, CEOs continued to collect their raises and bonuses right on schedule. The hospital was able to continue to build and renovate.

Will someone please tell me what is the average salary of a CEO? What kind of benefits they get, what is their bonuses- in dollars and cents terms. I think this is very much our business and the business of the community/patients they proclaim to serve!
