My brother-in-law's wife makes more money as new graduate from an ADN than I that have worked over 13 years as a health middle school teacher.

I'm happy they laid me off. I'm collecting unemployment benefits, they're paying for my RN program prereqs and maybe nursing class. Goodby teaching!!!!!!

My first job as a nurse I made more money than I would have ever made as a teacher. I made about $10,000 more that year than I did after 12 years of teaching in public schools. Now I'm making double what I made as a classroom teacher. No way will I be going back into education of any kind any time soon....not that I wouldn't want to because I enjoy teaching, but I can't afford to.

What a relief to know that in about 10 years I should be able to find a new grad RN job.

I think the instructor shortage is the same heap of B.S that the bedside nursing shortage is.

No way in heck I'm going back to school again to become an educator. I have a feeling that if I was stupid enough to believe the hype that by the time I incurred even more student loans and graduated that the jobs would mysteriously dissapear (again) leaving me in the same boat I'm in now...working under a lesser title with a higher credential.

Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me.

I'd have a better opinion of the chances of something changing if, instead of going to Portland, the conference was held by tele/videoconference.

Besides the cost of travel/lodging, there's the loss of productive time spent in airports, planes, etc.

The solution to the problem of finding instructors is simple: offer better pay. To fund that solution, fire some of the ever-growing numbers of administrative people at colleges/universities. The admin:student ratio at US colleges has exploded in recent decades.

I will be completing my MSN with an education focus in 2010. I currently teach in a large clinic system.

I have been asked by MANY people when I will be sending out applications to colleges and universities for my "new" job as an instructor.

No plans to leave my job and get a new one for about $20,000 less a year than I make now with less benefits.

Most are shocked that I wouldn't use my education in a 'true' nursing education role.

I do educate nurses...and doctors...and PAs...and ancillary staff...:-D

I work in Staff Development in a hospital -- and feel similar to Otessa. However, I teach 1 or 2 online classes per year at a local university for some extra money and to continue to development my "academic teaching" expertise. As I near retirement, I might quit my hospital job and just do academic teaching part time.

Why not increase instructors pay scale equivalent to regular Nurses salary? They are preparing future Nurse to do independent and direct Patient Care. Increase teachers salary - improve retention which in turn will draw more Nurses to Teach. Why teach if I am gonna make less money?

Exactly! I love being a preceptor and teaching. If I would not have moved to a new state I would have become an educator in the hospital where I worked. Love my job teaching in a clinic setting. Wouldn't un-love teaching in a college setting. Pay is a factor as well as correcting papers and careplans for 2 hours every night (that is what my friend who works part time as an instructor does...)

I have thought about teaching part time at a university starting when I am around 60-when I have been fully vested in the retirement plan where I am for at least 25 years and the kids are out of college and the house is paid off and the kids are on their own and money is not as huge of a factor.
