I don't smoke, and I don't like the smell of smoke. BUT it doesn't affect me nearly as bad as the stinky lotions that some nurses like to slather themselves in. I fought with the girls in the last department I worked in about that nasty stuff - it makes me very ill. And I see NO difference.

AND I used to get furious at the ones who insisted on stinking up the whole department with microwave popcorn - not only did the smell of that stuff sicken me, but it made many of the fresh post-op patients throw up.

"The fact is that walking around with your breasts popping out of your shirt, having more piercings than a pin cushion or having green hair are legal, too. And yet employers are allowed to restrict or ban all of those things at work, based on nothing more than the fact that they feel like it."

yes---at work these restrictions apply or should, but these people can go home and put their piercings back in, put their tube top on..and heck even wear a green wig til they go back in. Its one thing to ban it from comapny property, but to test your blood for it, come on!

I have family in Cleveland, and I applied at Cleveland Clinic before I graduated. They do a urinalysis for nicotine! I've never smoked, but that sounds extremely intrusive.

I agree that smoking is really bad for you, but obesity has many health problems associated with it as well.

The cost of health insurance is a big factor in this, I'd almost bet! Smokers tend to be sicker, and require more healthcare $$. I see this becoming a norm in the future just d/t healthcare costs.

I also want to know about the alcohol issue- if nurses can't have a cigarette why should they be allowed to consume alcohol products- including beer and wine. somehow beer and wine drinkers don't think they are part of the alcoholic beverage group. ever been up close to someone who had a drink the night before- ewww. talk about gagging. I am also sick of seeing overweight cardiac nurses- How can you be a CVIVU or a CCU nurse and be 300 lbs. what about food choices- who can you be a nurse and stuff your face with cheese steaks, pizza and chinese take out( why not eat the salt shaker or a lb of butter) eww, makes you not want for lunch. or someone who has eaten something with garlic first thing in the morning- that too make me want to vomit- I have to stand back from them- I can't take it or I will vomit

Over weight and alcohol consuming nurses are a major health risk- talk about sucking up the health care dollar. with obesity- what about the meds for diabetes, HTN, hyperlipidemia, regular trips to the doctor, not to metion that they are slower than molassas in January, what about the chaos that these alcohol nipping and after hours cockytail partying nurses create on the nursing units. calling out sick because they are out 1/2 the night or hung over or complaining about their bad dates or headaches and laying all over the desk in the morning after a superbowl party or your trying to give them report on a patient and the ALMIGHTY game is on in a patients room and they abruptly jump out of the chair and run into the patients room and start yelling" WHAT THE SCORE, WHAT HAPPENED?" DID HE GET IT< DID HE FUMBLE?- makes you want to quit your own job just to get away from them- because that's all you hear ALL day long. or Have to hurry up and get out of here- I have a party to go to and half their work is left. Let's include the drinking, sports watching and over eating with the cigarettes.

as stated above- the smell of that stinky nasty sickening sweet fruity lotion or perfume. OMG You can smell that crap all the way down the hall, it has to make post ops sick, and I also agree with the burnt popcorn, the peircing , the tatoos ,the flashing of body parts and dangly earrings- I just wait for the day when a psychotic, demented pt rips one of them out. Then there's the sass, abuse and mouth from the transporters, nursing assistants, LPN'S

An Interventional Cardiologist told this obese woman yesterday, it was her 300th cardiac cath about ways to lower her cholesterol- he mentioned diet and excersize and a new med Ranexa she blew right past his diet and excersize speech and went right to the new pill. Keeps us working!
