If the people that give you your check don't want you to wear something then don't. As long as they are not telling you to do something illegal or unethical then comply. It is not a big deal.

If they are targeting only certain people with the rule then I have a major issue with it. But some of the hospitals I have worked at had no necklace/bracelet/rings rules, and if it is fairly enforced I have no problem with that rule.

From the article, it does appear that any sort of necklace, not specifically one with a religious symbol, would have been prohibited due to concerns for nurse safety. I do know of nurses who have had necklaces and hoop earrings grabbed by aggressive patients and, if the necklace doesn't break or the earring doesn't come out, the nurse can get hurt.

Now, if only this nurse who was wearing a cross was reassigned, and a peer who was wearing the exact same necklace but with the symbol of a different religion---or no religion---was not, then there would definitely be grounds for discrimination.

Yeah, as long as it's enforced across the boards and not just because she was wearing a cross then I'm cool with it too. It may have been less about the cross and more about the necklace. That would be my guess. We like to see discrimination where there is none sometimes.

The official dress code says no necklaces of any kind -- it's unfortunate if it hasn't been enforced consistently, but that's still the dress code. I'm not v. familiar with how things work in the UK, but, here in the US, I'm extremely tired of (some) Christians carrying on all the time about "persecution" and "discrimination" whenever they're not getting special treatment. If she really feels that strongly about it, she can embroider the dang cross on the front of her uniforms and still be able to advertise her religion that way -- doesn't sound like there's anything in the policy that would prohibit that. But, hey, then she wouldn't be getting a special exception to the policy everyone is supposed to follow ...

Sounds like they are selectively enforcing the rules.

I'm not quite sure where you live in the US but I've never run into any Christians like that in my experience. I've seen plenty of groups complain discrimination when they don't get things their way. People will try and reach for it whether for race, culture, religion, etc., but it bothers me because that takes away from the times when there truly is discrimination (and I know it does happen).

In my facility, it's just a matter of keeping a necklace out of the way; if you can't see it on the job, then it's okay. In this case, the facility just doesn't want any necklaces, and it appears she was warned about the policy on necklaces.

The spokesman said Mrs Chaplin herself had also admitted wearing a cross was not a requirement of her faith.

It's standard uniform policy in the UK, no jewellery other than one pair of stud earings and a wedding band are allowed. It depends from place to place how strictly it is enforced, my old hospital our Senior nurse was very strict and the policy was adhered to, it is a little more lenient where I work now.

The article also states this

The hospital trust said today that necklaces were banned as there was a small risk that confused patients could grab them and cause injury.

The policy was nothing to do with the cross itself which could be worn inside (not outside) her lapel - an option Mrs Chaplin was free to take up.

It would appear she was given the option to wear it as long as it wasn't on display outside her uniform as well.

It doesn't look like discrimination to me, just a nurse who wouldn't comply with a reasonable request from her employer.
