This reminds me of a time back in the 80's when I was working in the ED when a male nurse came in with an earring in his ear and the chief of staff, who was bipolar, had a FIT. He called the director of nursing and mandated that she require that male nurses be prohibited from wearing such. So she tried to do this and there was an uproar by the staff so then she decided that no one, male or female, could wear jewelry of any kind. So instead of standing up to him and telling him she had more important things to do she actually tried to keep people from wearing jewelry. What a stupid waste of time.

From the posted link:
Mrs Chaplin, 54, from Exeter, said: 'For about 30 years I have worked in the NHS...

'This policy was adopted after it was reviewed about 18 months ago with staff and union representatives.
She was an employee at the time the policy went into effect, even if she wasn't and a recruiter was involved, it's the employee's responsibility to read the employee manual when hired, not the recruiters.

Hmm, another consideration of this case as she did not say that she had been warned prior nor recieved a resprimmand, is that she was due to retire in 8 months! Hello, hospitals are not only not hiring but like the last recession when the banks eliminated those that had more seniority in order to save on pensions, this may have been part of the decision. Just because we are nurses, does not mean that it couldn't happen to us especially in this economy.

She would have been warned prior to receiving a reprimand, and the HR department would have been heavily involved. It is very difficult to redeploy someone in the UK and it is a lengthy process which unions and human resources are invovled with from start to finish. Her pension would be an NHS pension which will have no impact on the NHS trust that she works for so I doubt very much that this played any part in the decision.

You have to remember this happened in the UK where employees are very well protected and as employers hospitals have very lengthy processes to go through to deal with discipliary issues such as this. If they wanted to get rid of her they could have used the full force of the policy as she failed to comply with health and safety policy, uniform policy and a direct instruction from her manager, that is misconduct, gross misconduct and insubordination which could have led to dismissal and her losing her pension, they didnt instead they moved her to an area where her jewellery was considered to be less of a risk.

I wonder what would have been said if the nurse were Muslim and had some sort of religious symbol on.

So, if nurses cannot wear necklaces .... why do doctors and nurses constantly walk around with stethoscopes draped around their necks???!!!!

Those pieces of equipment - hanging around a neck - can just as easily be used as a weapon.

Six of one. Half a dozen of the other I would think.

I grew up in North Carolina, lived for many years in Chicago and have travelled all across the USA.
Now I am in the Philippines and encounter American expats frequently.

American Christians from all regions are just as likely to fall into the "I'm being discriminated against" knee-jerk.
Christians protest frequently to bring back school prayer and make a big hubub about it even when there are laws in place which protect student-initiated prayer groups so long as they do not interfere with classes.

Concessions are made available that are not used because SOME PEOPLE want EVERYTHING to be given.

I'm a former Christian, I reformed to Islam as my faith a decade ago and as much as I see Christians screaming "discrimination" when there is none I also see Muslims doing the same... like a group of Chicago students demanding a special prayer area near the soccer field so they would be able to pray and not miss matches... that's just crazy.

On the flipside, as a former member of CAIR and long-time sponsor; I see many cases of discrimination against religion in the USA going unheeded and I feel it is specifically because of the overblown self-important people that are not content with equal treatment and want SPECIAL treatment.

After reading the article in full I feel that this nurse is not in that category. She seems to be someone who is just set in her ways and feels that since she has always been able to do something that she should be able to continue doing it. I don't see her taking a stand as a Christian being discriminated against, I see her taking a stand that she did something for X years and she doesn't see why it has to change now.

Next time you are in DC, look at the statues on the Department of Justice. Muhammad and Moses and Zoroaster are all there together... equally represented along with other great lawgivers of history.

A steth is just hanging on your neck, not encircling your neck. It can also be worn in a pocket or a side clip. A steth is also pretty vital in assessments for most areas of medicine. If she put a cross on her steth itself, I'm thinking it wouldn't cause this ruckus. It's not the symbol that's causing the problem!
