The Oakland-based California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee and two other RN associations said early Wednesday they’re joining forces to create a new 150,000-member nurses association, which will be an AFL-CIO affiliate.

The three organizations called the merger “a dramatic move to unite the power and influence of America’s leading direct care RN associations.”

Default 3 unions combine to form nation's largest nurses' union

WASHINGTON (AP) — Three unions that together represent about 150,000 registered nurses said Wednesday they are forming a new organization that would be the nation's largest nurses' union.

The agreement combines the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, United American Nurses and Massachusetts Nurses Association into a single entity that will be more active in the debate over health care reform….

Woohoo! this is good news. I have been debating whether to move back to california where the nurses are unionized, have pretty safe working conditions and decent staffing ratios as well as good pay. Now with this merger we will hopefully see some of the same benefits given to IL. nurses. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

It's about time that nurses become truly united. Congrats to everyone, hopefully the stand alone states will rejoin. This is great news for all!!!!

I look forward to more states joining in. I really wish they would, if only to address the ratios.

I wonder how, with all of the infighting with the SEIU,this will affect the future of the labor movement for healthcare. My personal feeling is that nurses should belong to a nursing union, an I do include the LPN/LVN in there. Perhaps now we can get back to the original idea of one nursing union, like someone mentioned the teachers union. That is a powerful, maybe the most powerful union inthe country.

I agree that LVN's should be included in a nurses union not just a NR only union. Already they are trying to merge the LVN & Rn state boards together in CA probably leading to a smaller voice for LVN's

I am a nurse in Southern IL what benefits are you refering to that IL nurses have. There is not a single hospital in Southern IL that the RN staff is union.
