CA Nurses to perform 1st trimester abortions

Several issues:Nurses are not trained in abortion procedures (much like many MDs these days). Per our own code, we do not ethically do what we are not trained to do. Add in that most facilities require an MD present for conscious sedation, so one has to be there.But the sticking point is that most nurses (like MDs) do not choose that specialty, are unlikely to care to work in facilities that provide them.The same issues that keep MDs and hospitals from provide this care, will also keep nurses from doing so.While a bill through government may authorize certain things, with many other laws and rules out there will still effectively prohibit it. If the BON does not authorize it as part of scope of practice, we still cannot do so. And given that nurses have never, in most cases being educated in this practice, it is highly unlikely that BON would authorize this change. Much like laws that say an MD must assist with death row executions, while Boards assert that they may not.

This story is full of holes: First RNs do NOT perform any type of abortions in any state - that is out of their scope of practice.

However, yes, CNMs can (if allowed in their state and if they have proper training/credentialing) can and do perform first term abortions.

A little too sensationalistic for my taste - this article needs to stick to facts that can be substantiated.
