Bush signs bill creating anesthesiology assistants

  1. [font=Arial, Helvetica]TALLAHASSEE -- Anesthesiology assistants will be allowed to practice in Florida, helping doctors put people under for surgery, under a measure signed by Gov. Jeb Bush.

    The bill (CS SB 626) has been before lawmakers for several years and has been fought stringently by nurse anesthetists, who say assistants are lesser-trained to administer anesthesia and argue they'll endanger patients. But Bush said that he was satisfied that patients would be protected because the measure requires anesthesiologists, who are doctors, to supervise assistants.
