From Advance for Nurses:

Beyond The Last Lecture
For Randy and Jai Pausch, nurses displayed humanity at its best.

By Amy McGuire

Last updated on: November 12, 2009

Editor's Note: Randy Pausch was a 45-year-old computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh when he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in August 2006. His inspirational book about living life to its fullest, The Last Lecture (2008, Hyperion), became a New York Times best-seller. Pausch died of complications July 25, 2008. In an ADVANCE exclusive, regional editor Amy McGuire talks with Pausch's widow, Jai, who shared her own story about those who "live in the moment" - the nurses who cared for her husband.

...To help them cope, Wyatt shared a book, Gone From My Sight, by Barbara Karnes, RN, which provides a step-by-step guide to the dying process, Jai said. ...
Blessing on all the nurses who touched this families life and helped Randy live to be able to inspire thousands people ... and support Jai on this journey.

I first became aquainted with Gone From My Sight in 1993 when I became educated as hospice RN and have shared it with 100's of families over the years --wonderful pamphlet that explains dying process in easy to understand terms.

PS: Jai if your reading this, thank Randy for the idea of dual computer monitors to increase work productivity.... something I'm now implimenting in my homecare agency's Central Intake department along with scanning technology. Trying to follow his Time Management ideas past 6 months, still have a way to go with mesy desk

Thanks for the links and the article post. Randy Pausch was such an inspiration. Just reading through the points of the his speech and tips on time management, it helps realize things that I can be doing differently.

I loved the quote:
"Procrastination is the thief of time"
Edward Young
Night Thoughts, 1742
So true. I would wholeheartedly agree with multiple monitors, I've used 2 monitors for several years, and it has greatly improved my efficiency of time. I can't imaging working with only one monitor.

I always tear up when I think about the Pausches. What an amazing man Randy was, and Jai must be from going through finding the love of her life only to find years later he's dying and leaving her with three young children. And to stay so optimistic through it all.. on camera even, it's just amazing. It's a true testament to the human spirit. I wish there were more Randy Pausches in our world. He continues to be such an inspiration to all even though he's gone. I hope the best for the family he left behind.

Thank you for this information.

I've reread Randy's book twice and keep it at my bedside.

As a hospice nurse, I appreciate hearing from the patients themselves.
