Bachelors Degree requirement for Mickey D's!!!!!! - page 2

Bachelors required in a burger joint? Really? So, deductive reasoning would suggest that a new grad ASN-RN who can't find a job would not meet the requirements to flip burgers at Mickey D's. What on... Read More

Nursing isn't at the leading edge when it comes to degree inflation, but it's not at the back of the pack either. Appears McD's is the back of the pack. Was only a matter of time.
My buddy who is a plumber and learned his job through a paid apprenticship makes as much as what CRNAs start at in my hospital. He will laugh all the way to the bank.

So, would ANY bachelor degree work? Or would it be in business admin? I wonder....if it was me, I wouldn't apply for the cashier's position; I would tell the manger, "gimme YOUR job"! Lol.

I've also worked at McDonald's while I was in high school. Hated it. It wasn't as much the open hours but closing the inside and finding all the nasty messes...

The last straw for me there was finding some ranch dressing that had spilled under a booth and was covered with a flyer thing and baked all day. I barfed while cleaning it up and quit on the spot. Not worth $5/hr and I just didn't get to shop every week.

Requiring a Bachelors degree for that? And probably still being paid minimum wage? Makes me thankful for nursing.

I worked at Burger King for a while when I was in high school (70's). I loved working in the drive-thru; it was the fast food equivalent of the ED.

    It's a lie.

“There has been some misinformation reported by an independent job site with no relationship to the Winchendon, Mass., McDonald’s. The original job posting, which could be accessed through McState.com, did not require a bachelor’s degree. We are working diligently to have the misinformation removed from the site, but to date the website has been unresponsive to our requests. We do not require a bachelor’s degree for employment. My organization is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse workforce.”

There are more than 50,000 English literature degrees awarded each year, they gotta work somewhere.

I'm a cashier for a large grocery retailer, and let me tell you -- you'd THINK that running a register is the easiest thing ever, right? You scan items, you punch in how much money you've been given, the machine tells you how much to give back in change, EASY.

Except what happens when you accidentally hit an extra zero because the machines are so old and glitchy? And you don't have a calculator because come on, they don't even keep us amply supplied with things like disinfectant spray for how filthy the belts get, or bags to keep the carousels full, and those are things we need in order to keep up a decent pace. OR somebody needs to do a price match and you have to figure out what the price is on a buy-one-get-one-free item, or so much % off, that kind of thing.

I calculate it with ease. 90% of the other cashiers I work with have a lot of trouble with it and often get it wrong. There's also a lot that's left to my discretion as far as what I'll let people get away with. Having critical thinking and basic math skills really helps.

The math required to be a cashier is elementary level. . .addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, etc. People should learn these basic math topics before entering middle school.

I used to be a cashier at two different grocery chains, one of which was owned by Kroger. I was also a cashier at Target, the 99 Cent Store, McDonald's, and Wienerschnitzel (a hot dog fast food joint). And yes, a staggering number of my coworkers at these jobs lacked basic reading, writing and math skills.

I worked at a dollar store.

I loved unloading the truck and working in the back... but no... I had foolishly demonstrated that I could run the cash register-- and do math-- when the cash register failed. I also had people skills. This meant I was always stuck at the front register (and oh, did I hate it!).
I tried to teach a coworker how to count back change (you know where you actually count back from the price to the amount they gave you... a lost skill, I notice) and, boy, was that sad. She did not get it, and so she just slapped the change into the customers' hands without a word. She also argued with customers. She got to unload the truck.

But yes, it's true. Many folks just don't have the basic skills and McDonald's or Dollar General is the best they can ever hope to do... especially since many of them also lack initiative, ambition, insight, responsibility and self-confidence. Some folks often aren't even aware it is possible to do better or choose not to because it is too much work.
Oh, but I could go on and on, but I'll put a cork in it now.
