Theres many people working these days into their 70s and 80s. My hat is off to them. Theres a misconception that older people arent as sharp as younger ones. Thats not true. I would rather have an older nurse taking care of me or my family. I am almost 50 and I will be going off to nursing boot camp aka clincials begining jan 2012. Im not concerned that there will be others there in their 20s or 30s. I come from a long line of nurses and from what I have seen, the older they get the better they get.. KUDOS....
I think the advantage of starting out as an older nurse is that most patients will rarely assume that you are just starting out in the profession, they will think you have years of experience right off the bat ... that is of course, until you do something very sophomoric to give it away!! The younger nurses can't fake that!

Wow!! Thanks for posting this! Makes me feel foolish for thinking I am too old at age 29 to start working on my LPN - BSN bridge program.

HOWEVER , I must add that I'm not so sure if she would still be capable of working as a floor nurse at age 81 if she had been doing this since her early 20's like a lot of us. Floor nursing would have probably crippled her a few years back. I have only been nursing for 3 1/2 years and feel like my body is falling apart already. I really can't even comprehend how someone could be doing this at 81 years old! Wow!
At 29, you're not too old for anything. I am almost 42, and I must say I am not too old for anything either. It's all in the MINDSET!

The article states this lady started nursing school @ 57, she's been at it for about 20 years I suppose. But for someone who started floor nursing at an age when most nurses are calling it quits, that is something to be admired! If I could, I would love to meet this nurse someday!

What a sad, sad, depressing story. Our society has a huge flaw if 81 year olds must work like this to make ends meet.

On the other hand, it could be an uplifting story if indeed 81-year-olds willingly take on this work for the sheer satisfaction it brings, as probably is sometimes the case. I am sure she's not the only one out there.

Only one or two of my relatives made it past 80, others got Alzheimer's or heart disease. Hopefully I will be different, but most likely at that age I'll be off in lala land wondering how to work a faucet.

I hope if I am still working at 81 I have the physical strength to pull the trigger of a shotgun with the barrel in my mouth.

This is one of the most depressing stories I have read in a long time. To be 81 and have to work is pitiful beyond words.

I am thankful I made the right retirement investments. If there was a god I guess I would thank him.

What are you yalking about? Nursing pension? there is no such thing unless you work for the VA
My mother is a retire nursing living on her NURSING PENSION (and, of course, her hubby's pension and both SS checks). She was VERY blessed....when her hospital "re-engineered" her out of a job (aka: get the higher paid nurses out), she had worked there JUST long enough to qualify for the retirement pension. (Hard to do since her 35 working years had 28 of those years married to the military man!)

So, yes, nursing pensions did exist. (Mom is 75.)
