Observation units

Does anyone have information they can share on short term addmissions or observation units? I have 2 units, general surgical and orthopedic which have a tremendous pt. turnover, and am looking for any info, as to how I might make paperwork easier, develope standards or protocols and so on. Thanks for any help received.
