BLS/ACLS

by jhns9vl

I work in an a small ICU, but one of the qualifications is to be BLS/ACLS certified. What do you do when your nurses let their BLS/ACLS lapse? In our rural area they say you have 90 days to retake BLS/ACLS. After 90 days, what would you do if they weren't certified?

If they had notice, there are available courses, and policy/procedure deemed necessary as a part of their job duties, I would send home w/o pay until satisfied the requirements.

We put them on suspension immediately. It is part of a risk management thing so that we can keep our malpractice premiums down. We also offer monthly classes, except for ACLS which is quarterly. BTW, employees take classes free in our facility, UNLESS they let a job-required certification expire. Then they pay like an outside person. Believe me, that made a believer out of everybody.
