ADN to MBA or BSN to MBA does it makea difference

Updated Sep 21, 2009 at 05:33 AM by divagirl

I have a question regarding nursing mangement. My colleagues and I are having a debate on the necessity of getting a bsn prior to getiing a mba or other business related degree does it affect your chances of getting into an administrative position if you dont have the bsn?

Are we talking about someone who already has a BA/BS in another field? Because I imagine it would be v. hard to get into an MBA program without a bacccalaureate degree in something. There are quite a few nursing programs out there that will accept people without a BSN into their MSN programs, but I don't think there are any other areas of academia where that is possible (I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong about that ).

The Magnet Recognition Program requires that managers have at least a BSN -- not an ADN with higher degrees in other fields.

So ... that means that people with their highest nursing degree being an ADN will not be able to work at any hospital interested in pursuing Magnet status. As that program gains momentum, it may have serious implications for people who choose the ADN-MBA route.

Actually, the BSN requirement won't go into effect for another 2 or 3 years, but it has been officially announced. The current requirement is 75% of all managers must have BSN's. The writing is on the wall.

If you want to be a nursing leader ... you can't get by with only the bare minimum of nursing education.

In my part of the country, MSN is the definitive credential for nursing management. Combo MSN/MBA programs are very popular. MBA's are losing their luster in healthcare unless they include a specialty track in healthcare finance - we're a different sort of animal.

My MSN education provided me with an understanding of what the nursing profession was all about. I think that the same level of insight would be essential for anyone aspiring to a nurse leadership role.
