Finding a job with a misdemeanor DV charge

this is my first post on these forums, although i have been reading them for quite some time. i am currently taking my pre-reqs and hope to enter nursing school within the next year or so. however, i'm very apprehensive. ten years ago i was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence (assault 4) after a dispute with my daughter's dad. he was shoving me around and for once i decided to stick up for myself. i slapped him, he slapped me harder, i called the cops, i went to jail. i was only charged with a misdemeanor and i'm pretty sure it's the lowest dv charge you can get. i plead guilty (like an idiot) and completed the year of dv treatment. i've talked to the nursing advisors and they said it shouldn't be an issue getting into nursing school or taking the nclex, however, i'm extremely worried about being able to find a job. i want to be a nurse more than anything, but i don't want to spend the next 3 years working toward something that might be a complete waste of time. has anyone ever been hired as an rn with a dv charge? i would really appreciate any advice you can share with me! should i forget about this dream and pursue a different career path? also, i got a dui in 2007 which i have completed all the requirements for and i took a deferred prosecution. will this also affect my ability to get a job? i'm not that worried about getting licensed, it's actually getting a job that concerns me, especially since i want to work in a hospital, preferably. thanks in advance for any information you can share with me!

It all depends on the policy of the hospital. Try talking to a recruiter if you can.

HoustonTXRN. Good response! I completely agree. The more current the charges are, from what I have seen, the harder it is to get into even interview. Most will look at the most current 5 years(friend in HR) but, for whatever the reason, be up front and tell them the sittuation/explanation. Honesty is the best policy...Integrity is all we have.

Get all your stuff organized like court papers, probabtion completion records, community service hours, documented therapy you atteneded and what not. When you apply for your liecnse they will request it. I had a DUI and I also had a juvinelle arrest and I was fine as of getting a license. It is a detailed process and a pain but it is possible. I got accepted into school, graduated in May 2010, took RN boards on July 28, and found out the 30th I'm a RN!!!! Its gonna be tricky to get a job but just prove your self and you'll get one. That's what I'm telling myself. I'm gonna start looking next week. But don't give up. Just be honest and up front and prove to them they'd be loosing out if they didn't hire you. Good luck!
