Dose BON check school records ?

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hi everyone, I am getting ready to apply for my RN license after lots of work and study.

I did not go to traditional school and do not have a diploma. So I am wondering if BON will check and see if I went to the school I put on my application ?

I know most of you are thinking I have no business as a nurse without schooling. **Wait.* *Let me explain my experience a little. I had a unfortunate teenage life that got me 8-years in prison, in prison I spent a lot of time in the hospital ward where I feel in love with nursing. I became a helper and learned everything I could learn about nursing.

I spent ALL of my time ether being a nurse, reading books about nursing, watching TV about nursing, talking to other nurses about nursing... I love everything about nursing..

Now I am free and I am ready to be a nurse on the outside. I have studied the application I will leave out my criminal past but I am not sure if BON will check if I went to nursing school or not.

Any information I can get on this will be very helpful.

Thank you

Uh ..um..yes they will check - everything. Watching TV shows about nursing does not make you a nurse. Just like watching planes take off at the airport does not make me a pilot.

Are you in the United States? If so, you need to take the NCLEX and you might want to check here and even see if you are eligible.

Also, if you are seriously planning to leave your criminal history off the application to the board of nursing, you should read some of the threads here first and realize that you won't ever get your license that way.

Hi KCMnurse, Please read my original post. I did a lot more then watch nursing TV shows. I was basically a nurse for years=Real experience, not just school. I am much more educated and prepared then your average just got out of school nurse.

I do know I have a lot more to learn and am am very excited about the next step of my nursing career.

^*^BON dosn't check "everything". They do not even check criminal records in the state I live in. I doubt they check school record ether but I am trying to make sure before I apply.

These are questions for the BON in your state. However, since you state that you have no intention of mentioning your criminal record, please be aware that sometimes BON members puruse AN.

Best wishes

Welcome to allnurses! :balloons:

The BON in every state requires documentation from your school that you completed an approved nursing program in order for you to be eligible for licensure.

And how do you know they don't check criminal backgrounds in your state? I thought every state did. Criminal background is a big thing in nursing.

Sooo, you're planning to embark on a career in nursing by lying about both your legal background and your nursing education? Nice. Be sure to come back here and let us know how that works out for you.

I will have to look into this.

I live in a self disclosure state they know what you want to tell them

It is not "lying". Do you tell DMV that you have over the speed limit ? I would say NO. Something different license.

I don't even want to know WHY you were in prison.

All the little tasks you did or read about do not make you a nurse.

The profession of Nursing does not need people like you to dilute our integrity. A lot of what we do is based on trust. That is an internal monitoring of doing the right thing not because you are afraid of getting caught but because it is doing the right thing.

If you must pursue a health-related career, a sneaky person like you might do well in Pharmaceuticals.

If the BON won't, the Hospitals or future employer will run background check

Criminal history aside I do not think you can take the test required to become a licensed nurse. States require that you graduated from an accredited school of nursing before you can take the NCLEX. There might be a way to take the test by what's called challenging it, but even then I am pretty sure they require formal documentation about where you got your nursing education.
