Denied licensure please help

I recently got denied licensure due to my past conviction. I received two drunk in publics and a DUI. Its been six years since my last conviction and have completely changed my life around. I have matured in many ways since then and continued to pursue my dreams of becoming an RN. I am now in the appeals process and I have no idea how to start. Is anyone going through the same thing? I would really appreciate some words of wisdom from those who have gone through or are going through this. Thanks

You may want to post this in the Recovery forum and the Nurses With a Criminal History forum. While no one here can give you legal advice, I hope you are approaching your BON with a lawyer who has experience with these issues.

I feel for you. I too have several alcohol related charges. I have been being investigated since September 2012. I finally had my sit down interview with them yesterday. they asked me to get a psych eval done, at my own cost. I'm dealing with the AZ BON. I would highly recommend speaking to an attorney and getting an eval to show you have changed. good luck!!!!

You really need a lawyer. You can look at my story on my profile, a few pages back. I had a drug history and psych problems 5 years ago, and fought with a lawyer for 9 months to get my license and got it with no restrictions. I am SURE that everything turned out well for me because I had a lawyer- I know several that went into it with the same or a better situation than me without a lawyer and have 3 years worth of restrictions. A license defense attorney will be able to help you appeal this and will give you the best shot at getting a license. Good luck.

Thank you all for replying. I'm going to talk to the Dean of my Nursing school and hopefully she will be able to shed some light on the situation. I'm planning on appealing and will agree to any stipulation they agree on. I'v heard that it may take up to a year to finish the process but I'm hopeful that it will turn in my favor.

Your dean cannot tell you any more than you already know. The BON does not share that information with your school. You've been advised to get a lawyer. Do that.

Your dean has no idea about any of this. I asked my director of nursing what to do and she advised me not to get a lawyer! I'm glad that I did my research and went with my gut instinct or I would not be sitting here with a shiny and clean license without hiring a lawyer.

You don't want to accept a consent aggreement before a lawyer looks at it. Not only do stips not count until you get a job, but it also makes it much much harder to actually get a job. Plus you have to wake up each day for 2-3 years, call or log in to see if they want you drug tested that day, if they do then you have to find time in the day to get to a testing center and pay $40-60 a pop. A consent agreement is a big deal, and you shouldn't just accept it because you want a license. You need to speak with a license defense attorney.
