Any nurses out there hired by a hospital after a minor felony on their record?

Nurses Criminal

Published

Does anyone know FIRST hand whether or not a hospital will actually consider a candidate with a felony on their record?

More than 14 years ago when I was only a teenager, I was charged as an accomplice in a theft. I DID NOT do the crime and I actually was the one that reported it. But maybe cause I knew so much about it or the state's attorney had a quota to meet, who knows, I was also charged. At the time, I was a young, scared kid who had no understanding of what my rights were or how a conviction would effect me. I didn't have a lawyer (just the PD). So, when they offered me a deal that if I plead guilty they would let me go, I took it. I think they even told me the conviction would come off my record. Anyways, it has never effected me getting a job before. I worked mostly in daycares.

Now I am a new grad nurse with a license and even though I know it is tough for all new grad to find jobs right now. I need to know if I even have a chance. The state gave me a license so they don't see my conviction as a threat to patients. Will the hospitals or other facilities? I know hospitals do background checks so am I wasting my time applying? They say they don't automatically disqualify you if you have a conviction but one hospital I know won't even take an ex con as a volunteer. I am so worried that I went through all this schooling, time, and money to be a nurse, and now I can't. It's hard to know if I don't get responses from the employers because of lack of experience or if it is my background.

If there is anyone out there who was hired AFTER a felony conviction and the hospital knew about it, please tell me. Please only responses intended to help. I don't need anyone judging me. I am an honest, law abiding citizen who has never hurt anyone in her life. Nursing is my passion, I am not going to switch careers or give up. I am hoping to hear from someone who knows first hand whether a hospital will consider me or not. Thanks in advance!

There is no such thing as a minor felony. There are degrees of felonies, yes. But criminally speaking, a misdemeanor is a minor crime, and a felony is a major crime.

Hi, I tried to post the name of the nurse attorney I used in Austin, and allnurses.com would not allow me to post it. I do not know if you can post your email information on this site. I wish I could help you. I am not a paying member on this site, so I can not post private emails to others. So sorry!!

Hey thanks that is great listing that webpage, I looked under Texas and found my hero, fourth on the list!...

this makes me feel so much better! i just finished my CNA class and i am worried about a mistake i made this past july. i was fired from my job because i stole money out of the register. it was so stupid of me and i am truly ashamed to say i did something like that. now whenever i got to an interview i just dont know if it's worth bringing up to anybody or not. i graduate from my class tomorrow and i'm looking for work desperately right now. i'm afraid nobody will hire me. i'm tired of being turned down from all of my interviews and i don't know what to do. from reading all of these feeds it sounds like there's hope for me yet! i not once got discouraged because i know if i don't own up to my responsibilities i won't get anywhere and and it'll just show i can be irresponsible. i really want a job right now and i'll do anything for some type of income. what should i do? should i be up front and tell the employer the truth. like someone else mentioned, i don't want the employer to picture me as a criminal and let that one mistake i made judge me for the person i really am even though i made one careless mistake for the first time in all 19 years of my life. what should i do?

Where you able to get a job? I am a RN but I have a stipulation on my license ,and have not yes found a job?

Wow congrats! Your story is very uplifting. I have a dui from feb. 2010 and I'm about to enter LVN school. I have a misdeameanor dui. I am scared that I will have a problem finding a job as that is the only arrest/conviction I have ever had in my life. Did you apply to a hospital or home health? What state are you in? I live in California by the way. Any comments is appreciated :)

I have a similar question, but I have a very messed up situation. I have a felony in FL for a credit card charge. The state of FL revoked my licence, but I still have my license in another state. My question is this....... Can a nurse get hired with a felony on their record? The courts told me when I finished the terms of probation, that I could get it expunged. At that time I would be able to return to work I without a problem. Now I am finding out that felonies can't be expunged?. Can someone please shed some light on this for me. I am so upset and scared I may not be able to support my family in the future.
