New Grad need a job for nclex

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi, Im BSN grad. I havent taken the nclex yet.Im planning to get a job first. I was wondering what kind of jobs can I get right now. Thank you

Just out of curiosity, why don't you take your NCLEX and then find a job? You will make more money as RN and the longer you wait, the harder you will be able to find a job. Hospitals prefer people fresh out of school and you do not have to take a refresher class if too long.

Anyway, to answer your question, depend on state and facility, you will be able to work at Registered Nurse Applicant (where you work as an RN under another license RN). These jobs are extremely difficult, again why hospitals want to take a chance to hire someone without license over someone with license? Also, depend on state and facility, you can work as CNA or LPN if you have license. Those are the ones nursing related.

Thank you for the reply. I need the money for nclex. Im in detroit area

See if you can legally work your state as a GN (graduate nurse/registered nurse applicant). There are several states that will not let you work as a GN, and I'm not sure if MI is one of them. So check with your state BON.

If you can work as a GN, then you can apply to any RN job that is willing to take a GN on. But keep in mind that should you fail the NCLEX, you will no longer be able to work as GN while you wait to retest. This means that you could lose any job you have, as they're not obligated to hold it open for you or place you in a non-nursing role should you fail.

Best of luck whatever you decide!

thank you for the advice.i looked around and I dont see any hospital hiring graduate nurses.they hire student nurses

Make sure you apply for a position that says graduate nurse or some residencies do not require license to start. Student nurses are most likely internship/externship/fellowship. I know KY takes Graduate Nurse or RNA.

The great majority of facilities will require you to get your license before you can start working. Even if they hire you prior to the NCLEX, you will still need to obtain your license before you are eligible to start. It doesn't make sense for them to start training a new nurse only to have them fail boards.

Graduate nurse positions are rare, and many states don't even allow them anymore.

If you need money for NCLEX, your best option is to sell some stuff on eBay or amazon.com (Nursing text books, maybe), get a few odd jobs, or borrow some money from family. You only need $200 dollars to sit for the exam.

This is so true. I looked around everywhere for "Graduate nurse" position here in detroit and I cant find a single facility or hospital that hires them. Im considering other jobs as well.

What would you guys recommend for a job? just temporary

Specializes in Critical Care; Cardiac; Professional Development.

Whatever you would be qualified to do.

im on the same page. i just graduated and waiting for cgfns (i heard it takes months) and have been submitting resumes everywhere i can. most hospitals have career pages on their websites. you can look up a position you are qualified to but it can also be hard. i agree with not.done.yet, just grab what you can.

If all you need right now is the money for the fees to take the NCLEX, any job would do, even one in fast food. Seems to me it would be easier to borrow the fees from family and then pay them back immediately once you start working as a nurse. Good luck with whatever you do.

yea i applied in hospitals around here for positions like PCA, surgical tech.etc. which I think im qualified for.. but most of them requires experience.I dont know, I havent heard back from them..Its not just the money, I just need to be busy.
