I feel like the plague!!!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I have been out of school just shy of a year in May. I had a nursing job right out of school at a place I worked since 2003 as a highschool student. In October I was laid off due to the LTC facility needing to downsize because resident population was down. I being a new nurse was one of the first to be cut. I understood. From then on I have been applying and e-mailing many different places in my area with no luck of an interview, and only have received rejection letters. I feel like I am carrying the plague with me, because I am new nurse with minimal RN experience. What do you guys suggest I do? Any input would be appreciated!!

Think outside the box. Look for private duty. Look at schools for one on one or sub work. (my daughter has a one on one RN) While these may not be where you relly want to work it may help and for some reason it seems that finding a job is easier if you already have a job.

Remember it is the economy not you that is leading to the "dry" spell in nursing. Keep us posted on how you are doing. You will find work.

Thank-you so much for the reply! What a great idea! I will have to look into that. I live in a small town less than 10,000. So jobs are hard to come by as it is and we live an hour or so away from the next "big" town :lol2:. I think I will have to look outside of the box. Last night I applied to a dialysis unit that needed a secretary...hey it might get my foot in the door. I have also e-mailed some of the tribes in our area at their clinics to put myself out there. Thanks for the encouragement and will keep you updated!

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

Since you have less than a year's experience as a RN, you may still qualify for most new grad programs/residencies. Try applying--or reapplying--because you never know.

Thank-you for your reply Meriwhen! I am going to apply and re-apply to all those positions. Great idea. It really doesn't hurt! Thanks!!

Specializes in Cardiac Nursing.

Don't give up. My situation is not quite the same as in my case it's been an unintentioned blessing for me to be unemployed right now (a whole story in itself).

I agree, think outside the box. Also, I feel you feeling like you have the plague. I graduated in 2008 and after my first RN position didn't work out, no application I have sent out since has resulted in an interview. I too have less than a year of RN experience, actually I have less than 2 months.

I haven't given up on an RN job, you shouldn't either :D

Specializes in none.

You are not carrying the Plague. You are just looking for a position when the market is flooded with Nurses. Keep trying you will get something.

Thank-you for the reply wildcatfanrn!! I feel for you as well. Something will happen for us. I just know it!! All of you have really brightened my outlook! Thanks so much!!

Thank-you for your reply Merlyn! You are so right. It is very flooded and I should just keep applying and thinking outside the box! I really appreciate your confirming that I will get a job at some point! Thank you again!

You are quit welcome. Hopefully things change.

I really hope you find something soon... It's really tough out there for us right now. Some of my friends who graduated last year have been working at LTCs and primary physician's offices.. One of my friends who worked at a cardiologist's office for over a year just got a position at a local medical center... I know she had been trying very hard and was very discouraged but it eventually happened for her and I know it will for you as well! Just don't give up and keep trying! Best Wishes.
