What is the best way to follow up with HR without being pushy or putting them off? I am sure they receive hundreds of resumes for each position but I want to make sure that mine has not fallen to the bottom of the pile. There are several different positions that I have applied for online and when I check the status, it says that the position is still open and they are still accepting applications. So, I know I'm "still in the running", or at least they haven't eliminated me yet.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try to see if you can find out the names of the nurse recruiters at the hospital and call them directly. Keep in mind, though, that they may not take your calls. The nurse recruiters at my hospital screen their calls, and state specifically in their voicemail "If you are calling about the status of an application, you will be contacted if we are interested in an interview." Also, if you call HR directly, they will not put you through to the nurse recruiter unless you have an appointment or you're already an employee.
And just understand that for those dozens of open positions and one hundred resumes per opening, there's probably only two or three recruiters sorting through them- so expect it to take awhile.

Once they start to go through applications and find enough qualified applicants they may pull the posting and start calling for interviews. This can happend over a few months or a few weeks.
