*UNEMPLOYED NURSES*

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Ello~

I'm just curious to know, for those of you who are unemployed nurses, exactly how long have you been looking for work? What are you (LPN,RN,BSN-RN,MSN-NP,etc.) How many previous years of experience do you have? Where are you located? How many applications do you think you have placed? What about interviews? Add anything else that you want! Vent, tell us how you REALLY feel, give your opinions/outlooks on everything.

How's the situation for NPs without experience (those who went straight from BSN to MSN programs)? They're essentially cheaper family docs right? Are they immune to the glut?

I posted on another thread about NPs I've talked to. There is a glut in a way... the ones I've spoken with say they spread out and do many things to make a living. All I know still do RN bedside nursing for same RN rate. But, they also work clinic, office, some hospital, etc. Whatever they can get. I have seen recent ads for NPs or PAs to join hospitalist groups, so, that is a growing avenue... I do know an NP who works at a drugstore walk in clinic and seems to just boil over in happiness having autonomy and spending time with patients as she wants to. Never had a more thorough physical in my life I must say!!!!

No & No.

I posted about that actually. If they're lucky, they still have their RN jobs and are being paid as a RN. Otherwise, they're just about as SOL as the rest of us.

Well I'm glad it is not just me, but it is scary, I am on the edge of financial ruin, and sinking fast, I love nursing, loved my clinicals, and wanted this more than anything, but I am sorry to say, it has become impossible for me to stay in the field, I have to find a job any job.

I feel exactly the same way! Luckily I don't have any debt...but let's just say my bank account is shrinking at an alarming rate!

That seems hard to believe though. Aren't they essentially primary care providers with prescription rights in most states? With the shortage in primary care physicians, wouldn't it be pretty easy finding a job as an FNP? Even if you take only Medicare patients, you would still make a decent salary at least compared to the RN.

Again no. You'd have to look it up if you really want detail. Your BON is a great place. NP's have limited scope and script rights.

Right after graduation some of my friends went directly into an MSN program. Its very difficult to find work as an NP if you have no clinical experience whatsoever. Be like a doctor that never completed residency. I wouldn't see one for my PCP and I am sure employers feel the same.

Kinda weird that graduate schools are willing to accept BSNs who have never worked as a nurse. A lot of these are not private schools but well known public schools.

Specializes in post-op.

I guess I should feel lucky- I live in Rochester NY and there are jobs here, I just left my homecare job to go back to the hospital and had no problem finding something, there were about 20 nurses in my hospital orientation. New nurses and experienced, I think location has a lot to do with. There were several nurses from the Buffalo area, which is about an hour away. Buffalo has several large hospitals and those nurses stated that there were no jobs available in Buffalo. And I do not see any foriegn nurses, except those who moved here prior to being a nurse and live here and went to school here.

I got my ADN in May 2010, GPA 3.95, LVN 2008: GPA 4.0, have a BS in physical therapy, having worked in acute care for 17 years, and a BA from Stanford. Have applied to well over 100 new grad positions without a single interview. To say that I'm discouraged is an understatement. I've gone on to get my ACLS certification and plan on taking an ER certification program costing a whopping $ 1000...Can't believe it all.

Oh and I have gotten a Nevada license and applied for new grad jobs there. Pending application for Kansas and Arkansas...

Confused why looking out for our selves in our own country is " racist". I havn't seen anything that suggest that. I think hospitals should have to own up to how many people they hire are not citizens. If we don't look out for ourselves no one else will.

I live in Oregon, It took about 4 months to find a job in long term care, applying pretty much everywhere in Oregon and Washington. I also applied to hospital jobs in California (but never got a single call back from there)
