New nervous nurse!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

My name is Corey and I am 39 years old. I JUST got my license last week! I am naturally a quiet, shy person. I hate it. Years of retail jobs before taking the nursing school plunge helped me a littl but I don't feel like I'm where I need to be. My last clinical instructor even told me I need to be more assertive. She felt like I had it in me, but I need to let it out lol. I feel like it will come out more and more with experience and confidence. I really feel like I don't know what I'm doing lol! Is this normal? I've applied to a few places, had a phone interview for a stepdown unit at a hospital. Didn't get it, not surprised. Was thinking med Surg or a nursing home. Well, my husband is pushing nursing homes because there are so many around here. And he thinks I need to ease into nursing. I would rather work in a hospital but to appease him I'm applying to nursing homes too. I live in Indiana, about an hour and 45 minutes north of Indy. Kinda limited so relocation will probably be in our future later on. But I seem to have come to a standstill. I am terrified. I'm scared of missing something, or not knowing what to do, or being wrong. Can I ask for advice from other nurses? I don't want to come off as incompetent or dumb, even though I feel like that lol. Are these feelings normal??

Yes it's normal to feel nervous. I have known many shy/quiet nurses who excel at nursing. Apply for the job you want. You worked hard for this now go get what you want.
