Hi everyone! I will be graduating soon and I see so many posts about places only hiring nurses with experience. I am wondering if hospital extern work counts as experience (or even helps) in the job search. Especially if its valid for travel work.
Usually not, but it never hurts to ask. Also, if you're in an interview and you have some really unique or exceptional clinical experiences, you might bring them up at that time.
With travel nursing, you'll likely be expected to 'hit the ground running' as a nurse with very minimal orientation, so that's one reason why there are so few opportunities for new nurses.

No, you need RN bedside experience. At least a year's worth, sometimes two.

Believe me, I did agency work where I went into hospitals, no orientation and was expected to carry a full load. It is not for the faint of heart or new grad. I had 5 years experience in a level one ER and still was occasionally nervous.
