Did they ask for your GPA, yes or no?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

So I am in my last semester of nursing school when we are supposed to be hustling and bustling to submit our applications all over the place. Long story short, my GPA sucks :/ I work so much, and I always volunteer so I can promise I am a competent person and I love working with people during my clinicals. My grades just don't show it unfortunately. So to my nurses out there, and to my fellow students who have already applied places:

Did the place A. Ask for your GPA, and B. What specialty did you apply to?

Specializes in Emergency/Cath Lab.

No one cares. As long as you have the degree and pass the NCLEX it doesn't matter. Unless you want to get your masters down he road.

I'm just starting sending out applications. Everything I read says put your GPA if it's good, don't if it's not.

The only question regarding my nursing education has been "did you pass your registration exam on first writing?".

The only time I've seen it was on an application for a nurse residency program.

I was never asked my GPA during an interview for a job in nursing ever, and I was technically a "new grad" twice. Once as an LPN, then 15 years later as an RN.

Nope, never. In fact, some even think a too high GPA is a bad thing. Graduate school and nurse residency programs are about the only places it'll matter.

GPA is a real thing for some new graduate programs around here (Southern California). The region you'll be applying in is more important than your desired specialty.

Yes, and I applied for a job in psych...a per-diem job, no less. But this was several years ago when the new grad job market really blew, and employers had too many applicants for each new grad job.

I wasn't asked for my acceptance into my nurse residency program. But after we were accepted into the program and rotated through a few units we had to interview for the ones that we wanted to be placed in. I choose MICU, and when I interviewed with them the manager not only wanted my GPA on my resume, she also wanted a copy of my nursing school transcript. So it does happen. That said, my peers who interviewed for lower acuity units did not have to provide either.

I was not asked...but that is a pretty small sample size

Yes, my new grad residency program did. They wanted a portfolio that included in the front cover:

1. Your name

2. GPA

3. Specialty Interest

My new grad residency asked me for my GPA during the interview. They also required my transcripts when I got the job offer. But I really think it depends on facility/who's interviewing you too?
