Help! Nurse manager interview

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello,

I have recently received a notice to come in for a face-to-face interview with 2 nursing managers at 2 different floors at ********.

I have passed the phone interview and I have a week to prepare for interview in person. Does anyone had such of interview? if yes, what should I expect?

All hints are greatly appreciated.

Most questions will be about how you handle a difficult situation, how have to went "the extra mile" for a pt or family; things like that.

The next thing I suggest is since this is an anonymous board; it behooves to have a username you to leave the information out about what hospital you are interviewing with that would make you identifiable to people you know; nursing is such a small world; I'm not sure if managers will like a potential candidate asking for "pointers" per se... :whistling:

Best wishes.

Thank you so much for your response. I was wondering, is it going to be a behavioral interview? would they tell you a situation and ask what will you do or ask you to provide an example from a previous practice?

Again thank you. very helpful

I'm not sure; though most are general information sessions, along with behavioral or situational questions; it just depends on what they are going to ask you; unfortunately, I don't have that information available. :)

thank you dear. I still have some time to prepare. do you know by a chance if I pass the interview how long does it take them to actually put me on the floor? I have to give my current boss 2 weeks of leave notice and find the place to live there.

You will have to find out how long the process takes for paperwork, reference check and the like; it depends on a lot of factors.

how do they usually notify you if you got a job? on a spot or they call you later?

how do they usually notify you if you got a job? on a spot or they call you later?

It could go either way. I've been offered jobs on the spot and some jobs offered me the job the same day or a few days later. Most of the time, I walk away knowing whether or not I have the job. One time I was fooled though.... anyway, I digress.

Good luck on your interviews !!!!! If you do a search here on allnurses you will find a ton of tips for interviews.

Why would expect anything other than a face to face interview?

This is where you "sell yourself".

Show up 10 minutes early, take deep breaths, and smile, smile, smile. Show keen interest for the unit and be ready for the "why do you want to work here" question. This requires research on the facility and their mission statement.

Managers want to know how you will fit into their unit. You may or may not have to answer behavioral questions.

"Tell me about a time you had a conflict with"... a manager, a co-worker, a doctor.. blah blah blah. This requires an answer as to how you kept your cool and turned it into a positive situation.

"Tell me about a time where you went above and beyond for a patient".. I always say.. I don't feel I ever go above and beyond.. I treat all of my patients as they are special.

"When a patient or family member has a complaint ... how do you handle it?"

I listen, acknowledge, apologize , and correct the problem.

Those are the 3 biggies.

It's a game, you can play it. Let us know how it went.

Make sure you know something about the organization's values. People who cannot tell me anything about the organization rarely pass the interview.

You will probably be asked about how you handle conflicts, what some of your goals are, and how you handle stress.

Good luck!

Thank u guys so much. Had in person interview yesterday with 2 managers. I think the second one liked me. I sent both of them thank u email. Couldnt do the card because it would take forever to come there. Also After the interview i dropped of my letters of recommendation by the office. noone called me today. I am nervously waiting. That is my dream hospital to work at. How long do u think i should wait before following up with HR?

Did you ask them questions at the end of your interview about how long can it be expected to hear back from them?

usually they still are in the process of interviewing other candidates, thus some time would pass before hearing anything back. But in general, I would just send a thank you note within 24 hours of your interview, then wait about a week. Sometimes they are quick to respond but also can take several weeks to hear anything. There are hospitals that do not send out rejections so you may hear nothing at all. But I hope you will hear good news soon! Good luck :)
