advice for finding my first hospital job

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello to anyone and everyone who is reading this,

So please let me start off with a bit of my history:

I graduated with my BSN in 5/2014 and received my nursing license in 8/2014. Despite looking for hospital jobs, nursing home jobs, homecare jobs, ANY kind of job (note: not the best at public speaking and interviews are definitely not my best skill), I could not get employed until 4/2015. Finally in april 2015, I started working at a cardiology office where I basically screen patients (obtain vitals, EKG, paperwork, etc) and I am currently still working at the same office now 2 years later.

My question is: how can I transition myself into a hospital job. Although I do have 2 years of work experience, it's in long term outpatient care, whereas i'm looking for acute inpatient. I also have a 1 full gap year from graduating and starting work. Do you think that too much time has passed for me to be hired for a hospital job? I'm currently looking for a telemetry/med surg positions since I know all the cardiac meds pretty well, but I really am open to any kind of position.

P.S. I will be attending a RN open house in 2 days so if anyone has any kind of tips and tricks for these kinds of events, PLEASE let me know! Thank you
