by kishykat Jun 8, '12So I have just made the switch from bedside nurse to IT Specialist. A major function of my job is train all hires on the use of the EHR. Currently we have a three fold process in place. We have an intial 8 hour class that they come to in the first week of orientation. Then the nurses come back for a 4 hour class 30-45 days later. Then two weeks later the nurses schedule time to meet one on one with either me or the Nurse IT person.
The first class is a complete whirlwind. The second class is better, goes over more tips and tricks. And the one on one is to make sure employees are comfortable with the electronic record as well as reinforcing things.
We haven't gotten great turn out to the second class or the one on one. I am wondering how other facilities out there do it, to keep nurses engaged and knowledgeable....

Most of the training occurs during the time they spend with their preceptors. We also have a pretty active group of Super Users who help coordinate the EHR training for their respective units.
