Nursing & Computers

Hi, I have my BSN and had practiced Pediatric Nursing for a number of years. I have been working outside Nursing, working with Computer Databases the past couple years and I am now wondering how I could best combine all my nursing expertise with my computer information. Any help will be much appreciated

it depends on what you want to do and what kind of "database experience" you had. The field of nursing informatics is one possibility to combine computer and nursing expertise. You can find info in various places. One is "http://www.amia-niwg.org/" that can give you some information. Check out the jobs descriptions, the education, etc. See whether your background and your career goals match. If your "database experience" involve a technical job such as in IT, then you have additional opportunities.

Have you considered working for a vendor in relationship to analysis and design of clinical information systems? or working for a healthcare facility related to developing custom data bases and reports? or for a healthcare management organization in the area of data mining ?

Other options include system installation, training or clinical analyst.
    Hope that helps

If you are looking to get started in the field I'd look at the website for Cerner Corp. www.cerner.com and their job posting site. Check out the application specialist - install positions if you are interested in working with clients, process improvement, installations etc. Look at the product specialists or functional analyst slots if your more interested in development and how the functionality relates to practice and guidelines. Good salaries and benefits, but may need to relocate or travel.
