New to Nursing Informatics

Specialties Informatics

Published

I just recently started as a nurse informatics specialist at the hospital I've been working at for the last 3 years. I've been a nurse for 12 years with ICU, PACU, telemetry, and case management experience. I've always had a love of computers ever since my Commodore 64 when I was in junior high. I feel like finally after 12 years of nursing, I found my niche. :yeah: I've already put together presentations for the medical staff. Now I am at the beginning stages of transferring our paper forms to computer. I have to say , maybe I'm crazy, but this is the first nursing job I've had that makes me happy.

That being said, I will also be the facility HIPAA privacy officer. My director woould like me to take an onkine training course if available. Does anyone have any recommendations for reliable online HIPAA courses? Thanks:wink2:

You are not crazy - just blessed that you have finally found your nitch. Not everyone can say they love what they do!

Welcome to this board and to the specialty!

I'll also check with our hospital's Privacy and Security Officer and forward anything else she has ,but see below for a start.

AHIMA ( the American Health Information Management Association)

has a great selection of courses and resource material. To access some of it you need to be a member. Other educational content seems to just require you pay the course fee to register. Perhaps your organization will pay for the membership or reimburse you for the membership dues. See links and descriptions below.

www.ania.org has a lot of educational resources listed.

And congratulations! I feel the same way about informatics.

ETA: I am not sure if there is HIPAA-specific training on the site.

I wanted to thank you both for your support. It means a lot! Also, thanks for the info. This is a wealth of information. I'm looking through it now.:heartbeat
