Need Help Preparing for Interview/Presentation!

Specialties Informatics

Hello!

I am new to the forum, and I think it is absolutely wonderful!

I have been a nurse for four years, a travel nurse for three. My background includes Critical Care/Step down. I am interested in Nursing Informatics! As a travel nurse I have become familiar with systems such as Cerner, Meditech, Mckesson, CPRS, etc. I just recently had a phone interview with one of the Healthcare Technology Information System companies that was an hour and a half long :uhoh3:! It went well:yeah:! I was invited for second round of interviews on the campus. The recruiter informed me that I will be interviewing with three individuals. Each interview will be approx 45 min long. I was also informed that I needed to give a 10 minute presentation on any topic.

I checked out the suggested NI/IT/IS interview question thread. It was helpful, thanks! However, I cant imagine what questions the interviewers might ask since each interview will be 45 min long. Any ideas?? I was wondering what could I do to separate me from the other applicants? Im also having trouble with presentation topics...Oh yea, the position is for a Clinical Nurse Strategist. Thanks! All the advice is appreciated!

For a presentation I would search Google Scholar for articles on nurses perceptions of EHRs. I'm not an EHR person really but the sense from the stuff I read is that nurses in general think EHRs create more work for them and inhibit critical thinking. I think part of the problem is that the interfaces were designed for physicians and with physician input and little-to-no nursing input. Or the nursing input came way after the fact making it difficult to incorporate the necessary changes into the system. The EHR I use at my per diem job now has us documenting almost 95% of what we do in a free text field under procedures. The information is completely unusable, unsearchable. Let me not get started ;-)

Anyway, I think that would make for an interesting presentation because it will really highlight what you as a nurse bring to the table (nursing knowledge), especially if you can offer so suggestions for improvement.

Thank you for your quick response! An idea that is so relevant to the position!
