i work in nursing informatics in a small hospital, designing and building order sets for cpoe and doing provider training, however i don't work under the hospital's information systems department. my director is trying to come up with an appropriate title for what i do, but she doesn't want to use a title (such as nurse informaticist, etc) that implies that i work under information systems. what other titles are nurses called that do what i do? help!

There are many who hold the title of "nurse informaticist" that do not report to or work in IS.

I'm assuming you also want to avoid the term "Analyst" within this title too, for the same reason?

Potential titles that include your responsibilities might be:

Physician Trainer or Educator

CPOE/Order Set Lead

CPOE Liason

Physician Liason

CPOE Support Specialist

CPOE Implementation Specialist

Good Luck!

I think it's funny that she has IT phobia. rninformatics has a good list there. If I were you I would look at what your career goals are and push your director accordingly. For example if you want to end up in education I would push for something that has "education" or "trainer" in the title. If you want to move more into the world of informatics something like "Orderset Analyst" or something that accentuates your implementation and project management skills.

I would be cautious in using anything about CPOE or order sets in the job title as it will always limit your responsibilities in the future to that area. As the organization's needs and projects change, you will want the flexibility to move to other projects without being limited by your title. It is unfortunate that your manager has issues with the term informatics, as this is a bonifide speciality in nursing.

thanks everyone for your suggestions!
