Health Informatics vs. Nursing Informatics

Specialties Informatics

Published

Hello All,

I am currently in transition to apply for a Nursing program. I have a previous Bachelors degree, and have a keen interest in the field of Clinical Informatics. I would love to hear more about the field. Is the field growing? Are there lots of opportunities out there in the field? What would be the difference between Nursing Informatics versus Health Informatics?

Also, I plan to apply for couple of online programs in Health Informatics concurrently with Nursing school programs. I am looking mainly into University of South Florida, and University of San Diego. Would love to get any reviews/feedback on those two programs.

Thank you all in advance!

Specializes in ER, Peds, Informatics.

I did the health informatics program at Univ. Of South Florida. I worked in clinical informatics for two hospital systems. I now work for a well-known health tech company. The health informatics education helped me because I learned other perspectives, not just nursing. I have found that non-clinicians think you know everything about everything - medicine, nursing, pharmacy, radiology, lab, blood bank, etc., so for me, the health informatics was the best route.

@ Diosa78: I would love to know if you have the done Informatics program online? If so, how did you find the program? How do you find the field so far? Are there lots of opportunities available?

Specializes in NICU.

I STRONGLY recommend finding HI programs that are accredited by CAHIIM. If you choose to stay in HI, going to an accredited program that will allow you to be RHIT/RHIA/CPHI (etc) certified would be extremely beneficial to you. Many places are starting to shift to wanting these certifications for jobs.

Agreed. CUNY SPS has a good program that is accredited.
