CABON Now Requires SSN to apply for NCLEX.

Effective on April 26, 2010 California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) will no longer accept applications that do not contain a U.S. Social Security Number. The Nursing Practice Act provides for a unified examination and licensing application. Once an applicant passes the examination, a license is automatically issued. Under these circumstances the BRN cannot accept applications for the examination and licensure without a U.S. social security number.

For those applicants who have failed the exam and want to re-apply; CABON will not accept re-application without U.S Social Security Number.

If your application was sent prior to April 26, 2010 or if you are already eligible, THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU.

No green card, no SSN, no CA RN license.

Hi Everyone,

I am an aussie citizen. Currently living in Australia. I would like to work in the USA. This is a catch 22 since I am in a predicament. The CA BON wont accept the application without a licence. The SSN wont issue a SSN. How does one get over this. Then I am all new to this. I hope someone can break it down.

Hi Everyone,

What is queer out here is that I am an overseas citizen not residing in the USA currently. How can i come up with a SSN. I even spoke to the SSN office who agreed that the SSN should not apply to overseas candidates. After all I am just giving a test, getting a result and being issued a licence based on the all criteria that is striclty relevant and in line with nursing. There after applying for a vacancy to get a job and then get a SSN. But, its really out of sync to need a SSN for a nursing licence. The officer agreed and told me that while many organisations are required to ask for the same. It's basically for identity purpose and in this case an alternate identity can be used. No big fuss. What the CA-BON is doing here is playing ball. (to get a job to need to have done your NCLEX, but to do your NCLEX to need to have a SSN, to get a SSN you need to have a job and the ball is back and forth). What the BON should come with is ethical standards. Be truthful and say we dont need overseas nurses here in CA from overseas and stop overseas registrations and put it in bold on their web page. Makes it easier for all to know and they can try New York or other boards that are in the same USA but are not fussed for a SSN.

CA BON Now Requires SSN to apply for NCLEX. CA-BON is just dodging everyone overseas. The entire process and the emphasis is on ssn which overseas nurses cannot get. Neither have they provided any information on getting a ssn which are obliged to tell us since they need the same and explain also what is the need for the same. How can a foreign nurse be connected to a ssn. strange!!!!!! framework

I believe you will find this is a feral requirement regarding SSN and not just CA require it. Vermont has just changed and now require a SSN.

Why are they obliged to give you information on getting a SSN? You can not get a SSN unless in the US with a valid work or immigrant visa or are a US citizen

Celestial2311; the best thing you can do is immigrate to the USA and then apply for a license once you have obtained via immigration.

The information the person told you from the Social Security Administration is incorrect. Individual states have the ability to discern who is and is not qualified for licensure as a healthcare professional in their state. While NCSBN provides an administrative network to unify the states via the standardized NCLEX examination and many states have joined the Nurse Licensure Compact it still does not override the sovereignty of each state.

As an Australian, you are not bound by the same retrogressive process that countries such as China, India and the Philippines are. You should speak with a migration professional about your options, if you've been working for at least 5 years or have a master's degree then you qualify for a professional migration visa which completely bypasses retrogression as retrogression only affects employment-related and lottery-based visas.

hello.I passed my NCLEX exam in California last Feb 2010 and just got here in the US last Dec 2011. I sent back the letter i got from the bon which states that i passed. so i gave them my SSN thru USPS mail. my question is how long will it take for my license to be verified and activated? Being in Canada makes no difference. You need a US SSN and can only get that once in the US with a valid work/immigrant visa
