Has anyone applied for UBC Nursing for the 2010 school year? How are you finding your application process?

Hey! I was just wondering if anyone on here is still waiting to receive the email regarding whether they got an interview or not?!

Everyone i know who applied has either received a yes or no, and im still waiting!! :S

If you, or anyone you know is in this position please let me know! I hope im not the only one!

Hey all,

I have applied for the UBC nursing program. I received an email on March 29th inviting me to an interview on the 26th at 10:30am. My last name starts with a B. I know we had to respond by the 6th so if people declined or did not respond on time, they may still have some spots available.

Does anyone know how many students they are accepting this year? How many get interviews? I'm from out of province so I am spending a lot of money to fly in for the interview... would be nice to know if my odds were good or not.

UBC will admit 120 students this year. Final decisions should be out by mid May (well...it was for last year. I'm guessing it won't be THAT different this year). Last year for us, they interviewed ~130 people for 90 spots. They typically receive 350 applications. I think the odds are pretty good if you are selected to be interviewed.

Do you mind telling me how's the workload/timetable is for first year ubc nursing? I am contemplating of living on ubc campus, but if the timetable isn't too horrible, or that i will be off campus on most days of the week for clinical, then I don't want to spend extra money living away from home...

Just in case you are wondering, the reason I am asking this early because I need to confirm my placement before May 1st.

First term: first month and a half of school, you pretty much have a full day of school everyday. You also have to do 12 hours of observation of a nurse's work (that's assigned to you). After that you spend 3 days in clinical, and 2 days in classes each week. The workload is...I won't lie to you, it's quite heavy, being an accelerated program. There are lot's of readings to do (whether you actually do them is your discretion), quite a few papers to write, some class presentations, seminars, group work, and a lab exam for one of the courses. There are also midterms and finals. They do try to alleviate your workload by giving you a day off each week during the last month of the first semester. Overall, it's not too bad, but you do have to watch your time.

Second term: Except for the first week of each rotation, you have 3 days of clinical and 2 days of school. First week of rotation you generally have a full day of school Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday of the first week is usually where you go for orientation of your clinical placement. Again there are quite a few papers to write, lot's of readings to do (but they're not really all that mandatory...you'll know what I mean when you're in the program), a lab exam for one of the rotation, presentations, group work, seminar, and exams. Second term I found was easier to deal with because I already knew the drill and routine of things.

k_mb. I emailed them about how many interview spots were given out and they replied 192. I'm not sure how many applied this year. I hope it goes well too :)

I talked to someone at UBC yesterday, and she said that we should find out our status (ie. if we are made an offer of a place in the program or not) by the week of May 17th to 21st.

So, how is interview preparation going for everyone? I've been reading a bit about the MMI online. So far most of what I found is geared towards students trying to get in to medical school, but I know the interview format is the same even if the questions are different. A lot of what I've read says that you really can't do anything to prepare for the interview. The admissions clerk at UBC essentially told me the same thing, that there is no real way to prepare. Hmm... Thoughts anyone?

Yeah most people I spoke with said you can't really prep. The question I think are more to see what your ethics are and if you can think quick on your feet. So I think you just need to know yourself and what your views are on general ethical situations. How you would deal with patients in difficult situations perhaps.

Mine is Monday... getting a little nervous!
