World Canada

Published

hi. Good Day! im a british citizen of filipino descent working as a nurse in a big NHS hospital here in London. im currently waiting for an application from an online recruiter of nurses from British Columbia. the advice i want to seek from anyone is:

1. do i need to apply for a nurse registration now or do i wait for my job application?

2. what type of exam do i need to take before i actually work there? or will i be given a "provisional" license to practice?

3. do you need a diferrent license if you are going to practice in a diferrent province or territory?

4. what's the best state to work in?

hi gino

my LMO was sent to me via email 4 days after i got my eligibility letter from CARNA. You need to contact your agency and inform them you have got your eligibility letter.

Hey Coco, not long now huh? Hope you got some warm clothing ready - I heard that M&S thermals were the best:D Having said that here in Calgary we seem to be having wall to wall Chinook's but I KNOW the freeze will come - probably Jan 1st!:lol2:

Gino, if you're with an agency they really should be answering your questions for you. Coco did it alone & things may vary when you're with an agency. My advice is pester them!!

Hi Rebecca

Is it really cold? Its been freezing today in London. How are you by the way? I guess you are cool and settled now. Have you started your PNP yet?

I need to ask you something about the rent. I saw a few places and the rent is above $1200 monthly. 2 or 3 rooms suite. Not far from Foothills. Can just walk to work. Do you think it is too much? I am looking in the long run as my OH will come with the youngest daughter in Aug 09 at least I dont need to move out again.

I cant live in shared accomodation cos I cant stand if the place is untidy or dirty. I know maybe the rent is excessive but I dont want to be sharing my bathroom with others. I used to get upset when my flatmate used to **** on the toilet seat and leave me to clean it. He could not even raise the seat. Then he will fry dried fish every morning and the whole flat will stink of it. Even my clothes smelt of fish.

I am packing some boxes to send as cargo. My cast iron pots ...cant leave them behind. Love them too much. I know cooking helps me relieve my stress.

Bye for now. Am on londg day tomorrow.

Rents in Calgary are high, there's no getting around that. The vacancy rate is really low because the boom in the oil business wasn't matched by a boom in housing construction. When my daughter lived there (2002-2005) she shared a two-bedroom apartment with three other people for two years (she slept in a curtained off alcove of the dining room!) then moved into an illegal secondary suite because of the very reasons you've listed cocoy2go. If you can find a place that meets your needs and it doesn't leave you too broke to eat, you'll be doing well.

Just one other thing you need to be aware of is that your daughter will need to attend school - so you want to make sure the schools are good too.

Personally, compared to London, I've found that the rents are not that bad - honest Jan!! :D

We have a huge 4 bed detached place in a really nice neighbourhood for $1700 (my SIL pays only $200 less than that for a tiny 2 bed hovel by a railway line in London) there are 3 beds for less than that too. You may want to take the small place to start but once your family arrive you'd be better off out of the Foothills area, it's not so nice.

The joke was that it's really NOT that cold yet Coco - today has been +10C & it deosn't feel as cold as London because it's such a dry cold. Even when we were in the minus figures the other week I've been colder in London in +15!! As long as you dress sensibly you'll be fine.

Hi Rebecca

I understand you are in the Edgemont area. I remember you mentioned it several times. Who knows i may go there too. Any last minute advice for me before I make the final jump.

I will go to M & S and get loads of boxer shorts and socks. Shame there is no M & S in Calgary. Its OK i am not afraid of the cold ....cos I am cool ...ha ha

Bye for now.

You'll need more than boxer shorts and socks. Get some long underwear, the kind that go from waist to ankle, and some long sleeved undershirts...

I got some like that for my younger kids - they're still in their packets! My teen insists on going to school in jeans, tee & zipped sweat shirt, even the other week when it was -6 one day!!! He said it's not cold enough for a coat yet!! We're in for another mild week again, so I guess said coat will stay on its hanger!

Seriously though yo will need to make sure you have something for those extreme days & on British Expats they recommend M&S before you leave as they're apprently softest! I got the kids ones here though, hard to find thermals in July - which was when we left!

Yes we're in Edgemont & it's very nice too!

Enjoy your last minute packing Ibbs - keep in touch!

He'll fit right in, then won't he? He can stand next to me :omy: because I"m still wearing just my hoodie most of the time too. In 2006, I wore it right up until 10 days before Christmas then finally pulled out my winter coat.

I keep looking at winter coats but we have had some cold weather and snow last week but warming up at the moment with a lot of mud coming in the house from the dogs

I have had good luck with LL Bean, it is online, very easy returns and the weather rate each coat. They are bit pricey but the coats due hold up for years. Sears has a Land's End department there coats are similar.

Got pretty much all my stuff from Costco - still hanging in the wardrobe!! I'm trying very hard not to be the "soft Southener!"
