Nurse Educators in Canada

I will be moving to Ontario (probably the Kitchener/Guelph area) in the next couple years to be closer to my husband's family. I am currently in the US. I am considering getting my Master's in Nursing Education at an American university. Does anyone know whether with a Master's in Nursing Education from a US university I would be eligible to teach in Canada? Does Canada have many online nursing programs? I have done some research on this online but have not found much information, and I have not found any Canadian-based universities that offer MSN Education programs. I would really appreciate any advice from a Canadian RN who knows anything on this topic. Thank you!

A masters degree from an American online program such as Excelsior or University of Pheonix, will not be considered as acedemically rigourous education as a masters degree from a Canadian accredited university. A list of Canadian accredited programs is available on the Canadian association of schools of nursing.

I am not sure if you are thinking that an American nurse educator may receive more job offers through NAFTA then a RN, if so, job postings for Ontario nurse educator positions ask candidates to identify if they are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and there are currently applicants who are in this catagory so it is not necessary for Ontario employers to recruit outside of Canada.

I was just asking because I'm interested in becoming a nurse educator but I haven't seen anyCanadian graduate nursing programs offering this specialty, I have basically only seen NP programs, and then a few PhD programs for research. It may be a few years before we move to Canada in which case I could finish my Masters, but I'm just trying to figure out if having a masters in nursing education from an American university would make me eligible for comparable jobs in canada as the us.

The programs are not specifically listed as masters in nursing education, but most Canadian graduate nursing programs can prepare nurses for roles as clinical nurse specialists or nurse educators.

University of Victoria and University of New Brunswick offer masters in nursing with a nurse educator option. Victoria's program is online and open to RNs who are a resident of Canada or the US.

In answer to your question are US masters educated nurses eligible to work as Canadian nurse educators, the answer is yes, in the 1990s, Toronto nurses only had full time masters programs available locally. Nurses who needed to work fulltime while they took the masters program part time program, enrolled in one of the border universities in the US and took the program on weekends by driving back and forth.
