Jobs in calgary, ab...any to be had

Hello all,

I live in winnipeg, been an RN for 2 1/2 yrs and recently applied for my license in Alberta. Haven't heard anything yet and now I hear there is a freeze on hiring :s

So anyone have an idea if I will get my license processed? And if I do, do I have a chance of getting a job? Specifically in calgary...

AB is currently in the midst of restructuring positions including a hiring freeze, particularly for external candidates. The next 6 months to a year will be tight, as far as jobs are concerned. You would be wise to stay put for now. There are less than 300 nursing jobs posted at AHS. Unless you're willing to work rural, your chances of landing a position in Calgary or Edmonton are slim to none.

CARNA will process your papers, but you are wasting your money. This is the worst time to relocate.

Well I do have an interview with a not for profit agency. I just don't know if I will get my license.. Have they put a hold on approving them as well as the job situation?

Just read your article. So is it mostly AHS that run the nursing jobs in AB? In winnipeg we have the wrha but there are places other than them who have nursing jobs.... Is this similar to AB?

No but keep in mind that you are competing with nurses who have been recently laid off other places, as well as all the recent grads and everyone else who thinks they want to move to AB. Best of luck to you.

AHS and Covenant Health operate 90 percent of the facilities and agencies throughout AB. It's not the same as Sask at all. Both health authorities have recently had funding cuts. As a result, hiring freezes in both health authorities. So few jobs Province wide right now.

How long do you think it will take for this issue to resolve? I was hoping to move by August... Is it possible I may have luck by then or still highly unlikely?

The budget was announced last week, and AHS is facing a deficit. We have been told that hiring freezes and possible layoffs are in order. The situation won't resolve by fall, since AHS plans to cut back as much as possible. At the moment, internal candidates cannot even make lateral moves.

Nurses in Edmonton at RAH were laid off when one of the units closed, so they are being shifted around. Calgary is also restructuring. We're looking at a year or more of this climate realistically.

Unless you have a firm job offer, do not move. Even with a job, should they decide to reduce positions, you have no seniority, which means casual or lay off, so be careful. If I were you, I would stay put until the end of the year, and then start looking again. Google AHS budget and you will see various articles on this topic.

Is this true for Lpn too ? I'm am also waiting for my assessment at clpna . I'm planning to move from montreal due to language difficulty .

Yup, I'm a LPN working for AHS in Calgary. It is true for absolutely everybody employed in the healthcare system.

In fact, I have a couple LPN friends here in Calgary who were working temporary lines that were supposed to last another 9 months and the lines were just cut and they were pushed back to casual.

It is a reallllyyy really bad time to try to move to Calgary and work as a LPN, RN, NA or anytjing.
