How long will it take the Quebec Gouvernment to mandate a LPN/patient ratio? Mistakes are made with patients because of understaffing. What takes so long? I feel the sooner that's in place and enforced, it would benefit everyone greatly. First day on the job I was responsible for 2 floors, 3 PABs and I was the only nurse that night with 70 pts to give meds to and wound care, orthopedic stockings ECG. I think it's dangerous for the patients when the nurses workload is way over the top. Think of all the dangerous mishaps that could happen and we are held liable, sued for mistakes yet with crazy workload expectations the is bound to be mistakes somewhere, noticed or not. We need to speak for our patients !!Remember we are their voice.

Do you have a union there?
When we were no longer able to give good quality care to our clients because of workload we would fill out a workload sheet and send it to our union. It probably took us 2 months of doing it consistently before things changed and we ended up with a new full time position. I always go by the rule that if it isn't written down it didn't happen, so if no one writes down that they are working short, it didn't happen.

Thank you for your reply and ideas. I just don't understand why it has to be difficult for nurses to have normal working conditions. I must say that I proud of you to stand up for what's right. We need more nurses like you, and we should not be afraid to lose our jobs for stateing the dangerous situation that is affecting healthcare everywhere. We need a miracle!! Good luck to you !
