Any one currently taking BCIT nursing program are there any people who came directly from high school?

b/c by Dec, I will have 42 UBC credits, and by April I should have 54.. so it's a big difference!

BCIT BSN

Hey guys, so heres the info.

to be competitive you need:

1-a minimum of 60 post secondary credits (yes it says 30 on the website, but it is competitive entry so it's based on what everyone else has. for the last couple years, successful applicants have had a minimum of 60...sometimes even a previous degree)

2- some volunteer or work experience in a health care setting with patient interaction

3-all of the high school requirements

-4having the Libs and other 5 part time courses from the program completed prior to entry, greatly increases your chances at acceptance as it lightens your workload which increases your chance for success in the program.

timeline:

deadline for applications and all documents was Aug 31st

Shortlisted applicants should know around OR before OCT 15

once shortlisted, you will be asked to provide a reference letter and letter of intent

final decisions will be made by OR before NOV 30

This program is highly competitive. Previous intakes have had over 700 applicants. 150 are usually shortlisted and I believe there is about 88 seats...however some of those seats will go to people who deferred last intake.

hope this helps!

good luck to you all, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and have been checking my BCIT inbox a hundred times a day. :)

Hi All. Im new to this forum but maybe I can help.

I am currently in level 4 of the BCIT program and have gone through what most of you are going through now.

The above quote is right. Credits are important, GPA is not! I entered with 54 credits and a GPA of 3.0. I got waitlisted the first time, because I didnot "beef" up my application. Have as MANY references as you can! It will help you.

Also taking the extra libs courses that is mentioned in #4 is important. They view it as you will be MORE successful because you have already finished them. Also you get the summers off (if your a January start). The biggest thing I would suggest is just make your profile appeal to them. Lots of everything. It took me 3 years to get into the program, but it was well worth it.

Good luck!:D

Thanks for the info lmfcdn and smiley65!

I had a question foe you two, I applied for the January intake and did not get accepted nor was I shortlisted:(. I had 46 credits and was told that I didn't have enough credits so in hopes for a better outcome the next time I apply, I was thinking about taking some Lib classes. Since the majority of the classes are offered starting at 630-930pm, and since I live about 2 hours away from Bcit, do you think its safe/possible for me to take these courses online? I've never taken an online course and am a bit skeptical into taking them as I would have to teach myself, should I try it?

Were these classes hard??

What Lib courses did you guys take?

I'm kind of nervous, I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars and end up failing the course....

Thanks again for your your help ladies!

Im sorry that you didnt get accepted. Keep applying its worth it in the end. So, YES! I would take a libs class, I have a few friends with NO post secondary experience and they got in based on that.

So If you have your English and Psychs I would defiantly take the remaining libs classes. Do you already have a 2nd year transfer elective? These elective courses should probably be taken through a different school as there is limited offered at BCIT. So if you already have your English, psychs and 2nd year transfer classes that leave three other classes you need. Libs 7001, Libs 7002 and HMGT 7180. you can look it up yourself here: http://www.bcit.ca/study/courses/

SO the thing about online courses is you have to get used to them. We have online courses throughout our program. Yes they suck but it helps develop independent learning. Also all of level 5 is online as everyones clinical is all over the place. It does look better if you successfully complete these courses online as you can say "I can handle the online portion, look". That being said, yes they are hard (some more than others, but I find that the entire program is hard). I find I spend 48-60 hours a week combined with clinical, class, homework, clinical prep and writing essays and presentations. So the hint about taking online classes is to take the right one, Libs - Ethics DO IT IF U CAN IN CLASS. Its probably one of the harder ones, but you can do it during one of your semesters if u have time.

HMGT 7180 is long, but it is doable I know many ppl that took this one in level 2 and 3. :yeah:

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

Rachel94...I'm glad you are looking to try again :) from my experience, I have taken 8 courses online. For my application alone, I took psych 1 & 2 through cap U, Libs 7001 last term, and am currently in Libs 7002 through BCIT. I recommend you take the 2 levels of psych, eng, and the 2 Libs classes....you can take psych (or sociology) and eng at an institution closest to you if you prefer an in class environment, however the 2 Libs can not be taken elsewhere. That would put you at 64 credits which would make you competitive. HMGT cannot be taken unless you are enrolled in the program and the 2 lib electives (I took philosophy) must be a 200 level or higher, so if if u don't have the 100 level for your desired program, I suggest one that allows you to start at the 200 level (otherwise you will end up taking 3)..... It sucks that you didn't get in this time, but keep your head up :) its only a matter of time.

And you don't really have to 'teach yourself', most online environments are quite supportive, you just have to motivate yourself and commit to the work because they still have weekly deadlines and exams etc :)

LMFCDN and Smiley65,

so here's my story, I have my eng and one psych. Next semester i will finish my 2nd Psych and take 3 Libs classes (7001, 7002, 7012). I'll do 2 online and the 7002 in class since smiley said that i should take it in class if i can....

You are guys are great! Thank you so much for taking the time to help me:) it so nice to know that someone out there cares and knows how hard this whole thing can be....it's also nice to know that there are great people like you in this program, which makes me want to be a part of it even more:)

Oh and i got a volunteer position at a hospital so i hope that'll help this process too!

Ah oh, i have one more question (sorry). When you guys took the online Lib classes, were the exams in class? or were they all online?

Thank you thank you thaknyoU! again!

It wasn't me who said to take 7002 online....BUT I am doing it now and it is challenging...., at the same time, if I want to my work at 11 pm I can...For most of my online courses, the exams had to be proctored (someone watching you) at a testing centre... for example, I am currently in BHSC 0100, through BCIT, to refresh my anatomy knowledge. My entire grade is based on 3 exams, all of which take place at BCIT. For Libs 7002, we have a quiz online, every 2 weeks (it is timed as to discourage cheating) and the final will be at BCIT, 20 percent of the mark in that class comes from participating in the online discussions. The thing I find with online classes, is that there is alot more reading to do....you don't get the lecture time that you would in a class and so the discussion portion of the course is more time consuming.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will hear good news regarding my application within the next week, and if I can help you at all once you are in the libs classes, feel free to drop me a message.!

edit/ thanks for directing me to the right topic :)

Hi Jeffy604

You are not alone my friend! I too graduated from High school in June and I am currently doing 5 course at bcit and I just registered for classes in January which are another five so by the end of april I will have obtained my 30 credits. Although I will not stop there and will continue doing next five courses for the summer so by October 1st I can apply for the nursing 2013 August intake with 45 credits with ALL the nursing pre reqs included: Liberals 7001, Liberals 7002, Psychology 1, Psychology 2, ENGLISH 1177, TWO liberal electives as well health related courses! I am taking all these courses at BCIT to increase my chances of getting into the program SO i will be in nursing school when I am 20. You also need high school courses I am sure you are aware of the requirements it is highly relevant that you've achieved those grades or possbily higher. Like for me I've met all the requirements but they were above what was recommened. It is also important that you volunteer or work in a health related field. I currently volunteer at a Seniors home and have almost 100 hours I also volunteered at the Hospital, and the Canadian red cross. Keep your options open and work in many different health-related fields. Don't just go for the required hours that the BCIT nursing page tells you to have. It's always better to have MORE than what is expected. So all you have to do is obtain over your 30 credits of post secondary+nursing pre reqs+ science or health related courses so when you apply you will be competitive and increase your chances of getting accepted! They accept people who have 45-60 credits. Exciting isn't it? You still have lots of time to get things together it would be a lot faster to do 5 courses at a time and even better if they're all taken at BCIT rather than other schools because BCIT has a very specific learning technique and system. BCIT is a wonderful school, with awesome teachers ( from my experience) with a powerful reputation you won't regret graduating from such a highly reputated institute! Goodluck and just send me a message if you any questions! REMEMBER stay positive and ask a lot of questions. And who knows you may get in sooner than you think I had a friend who only got into the BCIT nursing program with 25 credits! But then again it depends on the pool of the application. Your fellow posters on here are correct as well BCIT as well as any other colleges or universities that offer BSN don't take high school students in right away. There are things to do before hand. It is better if you take the time out for yourself to go speak with a councellor on how to increase your chances and what courses to take in advance to lighten the workload.

Hi, I am currently in level 1 nursing program @ bcit. I had 54 credits post-secondary including english11777, psych 1, 2 libs 7001, 7002 and an elective course. I need to do health management and an elective in the summer. It is better to take all ur electives so u will have a free summer. Everyone that is in my program have a degree/bachelors. And there's a handful that are 20-21. You can definitely make it in. They really just want all your libs and electives taken :) its a very intense program and I have a child, it is do-able.
