I am a new grad RN looking to get into public health nursing and getting a job at a local health unit. I am looking for any advice on getting my foot in the door, or how to gain skills/ knowledge in this aspect of nursing. Every job ad I have read in Ontario, requires a Bachelor degree in public health nursing or a public health nursing certificate. I have been going in circles trying to figure how the heck I can get a certificate in public health and can't find anything. Can anybody help!??

If you're a member of RNAO you can join the community health nurses initiative group.

How about infection control? Some schools offer a certifcate or some courses in it!

It's not easy. I work with someone who got her masters in public health and still could not find a job. Sorry I don't really have any advice.

Specializes in geriatrics.

You don't require a certificate in public health, actually. They just need to be hiring, which is a challenge. Look for openings in clinics, community centres, CCAC and the city. Definitely join the community health nurses group in order to network.

Hi Brownie I was reading one of your other posts and I am writing my exam in June. Would you mind sending me the study questions you got from your friend. [email protected]

Thank you I would really appreciate it

This has been my understanding as well. That you don't need a specific certificate but just need to find somewhere that's currently hiring.
